Four years ago, Greg from The Village of Carp BIA drove a starry-eyed entrepreneur, freshly transplanted from downtown Montreal, all over Carp. COVID put a sudden end to my career and it was time to start over. So, after asking for his help, we found ourselves brainstorming ideas on what my very first brick-and-mortar business would be. I only knew two things: I wanted it to be in my new home, and I wanted to get to know and serve my new neighbours.

That's not just a line: when you live in a big city, you're a stranger. You can't really set roots. You just get used to to the possibility that anyone you see today will disappear from your life tomorrow. With nothing left to lose, it was now or never.

But what was it going to be? A coffee shop? We already had Alice's Village Cafe. A bakery? We already had Carp Bakery. A pizza place? We already had Village Pizza Carp, What about a restaurant? We already had The Swan at Carp Restaurant and Ridge Rock Brewing Co. What about ice cream? Carp Custom Creamery did the job better than I could imagine!

The tour came to an end, and parked in the driveway, still no answer came. I was frustrated and less sure of anything than ever. Then Greg said, "why not a barbershop"?

The funny thing was, he didn't know that it was our old family business, so I had a private "stars have aligned" moment in my mind. My grandparents had passed and the old barbershop in Montreal, which raised my father, his brother and sister, and all of the grandkids, had been recently sold off after being in the family since 1953.

So I said, "that's a good idea".

💈 2 Years 's Counting | Thank You to Everybody!

Where has the time gone?! Two years to this day, the final renovations were complete, and still with a slight smell of drying paint, we had our very first customers at our little shop in Carp Village on March 25, 2024.

It was a 5-month long process, from sketches to permits to renovations, but we turned this old neglected grocery storage corridor into Carp's first barbershop since the time of Clifford Langstaff, who retired over 30 years prior.

We still honor Mr. Langstaff, and other local legends of the trade, with a touch of our old family traditions in the barbering trade going back 5 (that's right, FIVE) generations, both in Italy and Canada. Hospitality and customer service run through our very veins!

A special shout-out to our very first customer, Mister John Lobb, a class act of a gentleman who continues to get his hair cut here, and who has seen us grow from a one-man, bare-walled and uncertain little shop into a proper local small business.

We couldn't have done it without you West Carleton, the true heroes of this modest little story, Carp, Kinburn, Fitzroy Harbor, Constance Bay, Marathon Village, Dunrobin and even Kanata and Stittsville.

To many more years of growing with our community, and improving even more, every single day, to make this the best barbershop in Ottawa, and for myself as an owner, to make this the best barbershop in Ottawa to work.
