In response to the disgusting news regarding the allegations at The Nordic Spa with over 36 different Massage Therapists and so far 150 victims coming forward in the class action from almost 20 years of abuse I just wanted to provide clarity and understanding of how we would handle any allegation as a clinic owner.
First of all, Quebec is an unregulated province meaning there are no protections for the public from a College body to keep a record or remove one's licence, someone who lost their licence to practice in Ontario or never passed the provincial exams can easily just work in Quebec, to be a Massage Therapist in Quebec is a 300-500hr course this is the only province with such low requirements by comparison Ontario is 2800-3000hr program, all of our Massage Therapy staff have liability insurance must complete yearly ethics and professional conduct courses and are regulated under the Ontario regulated health professions act and must have an active licence through the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario https://www.cmto.com/ as for our formal policies and procedures I have zero tolerance, if at any point a patient reports professional misconduct particularly SA that contractor is suspended immediately until further investigation the practice specialist at the College would be contacted with a formal complaint or report either by the patient police or myself and the College moves forward with their own investigation at no point would that individual work with patients at our clinic unless proven not guilty. As added training all of our staff will be completing a trauma informed care workshop in November to ensure patients are always supported heard and receive the most compassionate care possible.
