In 2010, Australian tourist Victoria Curthoys developed a severe bone infection after getting a pedicure at a fish spa in Thailand.
She had a small open wound on her foot at the time, which allowed water-borne bacteria, later identified as Shewanella, to enter her body.
The infection spread to the bone and developed into osteomyelitis, requiring years of treatment, including antibiotics and multiple procedures.
Despite efforts to control it, the infection kept returning, and doctors ultimately amputated all five toes on her right foot to stop it from spreading further.
