โMy Incision Healed, So Why Do I Still Feel Tight?โ
โMy Incision Healed, So Why Do I Still Feel Tight?โ
An incision can look fully healed while deeper tissues are still adapting.
Tightness may be influenced by scar tissue, protective movement, changes within the chest wall, swelling or reduced movement during recovery.
A simple place to start is with slow, comfortable breathing. Place your hands gently around the lower ribs and notice whether you can breathe into the sides and back of your rib cage without forcing the movement.
Stop if anything feels painful, and speak with your healthcare team if the tightness is persistent, worsening or affecting your daily activities.
Have you experienced tightness even after your incision appeared healed? Reach out to Mastectomy Guide to find an MG-trained massage therapist near you.

Shoulder discomfort after breast or chest surgery may be connected to more than the shoulder itself.
Protective posture, changes across the chest and rib cage, scar restriction, cording or altered movement patterns may all influence how the shoulder moves and feels.
A thoughtful assessment looks beyond the painful area and asks:
What changed throughout the larger system?
Massage therapists, what areas do you assess when a client presents with shoulder discomfort after breast or chest surgery?
