It's the end of an era as Classicuts, a beloved hair salon, is set to close its doors forever on May 22, 2023. For over four decades, Classicuts has been a fixture in the lives of many in Port Colborne, Ontario, Canada. It all began when I walked into Donut 68 looking for a job and met the man who would become my mentor, Frank Borgmann.
Frank's guidance led me to learn the art of cake decoration, Kieflies making, and salesmanship at Commisso stores and Simcoe Fairs. He even convinced me to pursue a career in hairdressing, as his wife Margaret owned Classicuts at the time. Frank was right when he warned me that big companies like Tim Hortons would come in and close small businesses.
Despite the challenges, I persevered and worked at Donut 68 for eight years before attending hairdressing school. I then worked for Frank and Margaret at Classicuts for 14 years until they sold it to me in 2000. The salon has been my passion and pride for 23 years, but now it's time to say goodbye.
I owe my success to Frank, my parents, and everyone who worked at and visited Classicuts. The salon lasted for 43 years thanks to the loyal customers who trusted us with their hair and the dedicated staff who made it a welcoming place. I am grateful to my sons, Kelly and Connor, my best friend Nando, and my great employees Kelly Murphy, and Brittany Brixhe for all their support.
The bittersweet closing on May 22nd also happens to be Frank's birthday, which makes it even more poignant. He was there for me from the beginning and will always hold a special place in my heart. But the end of Classicuts is not the end of my career. Kelly Murphy and I will be renting chairs at the LL Salon on 490 Steele Street.
As I embark on this new chapter in my life, I look forward to enjoying my pre-retirement with family and friends. I hope to see all my clients at LL Salon. My heartfelt gratitude goes to everyone who made Classicuts a part of their lives.
