DID YOU KNOW?

That cracking sound during a chiropractic adjustment isn't bone grinding on bone — and it's not even the most important thing happening in the room.

The sound is caused by a rapid change in pressure within the joint, releasing dissolved gases from the synovial fluid. It's called cavitation, and an adjustment can still be effective whether you hear it or not.

What matters more is what spinal manipulation is doing to the joint itself.

When a controlled force is applied to a restricted joint, a few things may happen:

- Joint mechanics improve — taking the joint slightly past its normal active range of motion can release built-up pressure and address minor restrictions
- Nerve sensitivity decreases — sensory receptors in the muscles and tendons are stimulated, which may help the central nervous system process pain signals differently
- The body's natural pain pathways may be activated — releasing pain-modulating chemicals like serotonin and noradrenaline
- Muscle guarding reduces — as joint mobility is restored, surrounding muscles may relax and spasms may ease

The goal isn't the crack. It's restoring movement, reducing irritation, and giving your body the conditions it needs to recover.

Curious about chiropractic care or whether it may be right for you? Our team is happy to answer your questions — no doctor referral needed, and direct billing is available.

Give us a call at 519-583-0552.

Summer in Port Dover means more time outside — and more demands on your body.

Whether you're back on the water, cycling the trails, or finally tackling that yard project, a few habits can go a long way:
— Warm up before activity, not after
— Ease into new or seasonal activities gradually
— Stay hydrated — dehydration affects muscle function more than most people realize
— Listen to your body. Soreness is normal. Sharp or persistent pain is worth getting assessed.

Enjoy the season — and take care of the body doing the work.

MYTH OR FACT?

Myth: Massage therapy is just a luxury — it's not really part of healthcare.

Fact: Registered Massage Therapy is a regulated health profession in Ontario. RMTs complete extensive clinical training and are qualified to assess and treat conditions of the soft tissue and musculoskeletal system.

Massage therapy may be used to address muscle tension, support recovery from injury, and promote overall well-being — and direct billing is available for most extended health plans.

No doctor referral needed. Reach out to learn more.

Understanding Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
With Barbara DeSerrano, Physiotherapist, RPT, CAFCI

Tingling or numbness in your thumb, index, middle, or ring fingers? You may be dealing with carpal tunnel syndrome — and it's more common than you might think.

Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when increased pressure on the Median Nerve — as it passes through the wrist — causes those familiar symptoms. It can happen with repetitive gripping actions like holding a phone or steering wheel, or even from keeping your wrists in a bent position while you sleep.

A few things that may contribute:
— It occurs more frequently in women
— Conditions like diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis can be factors
— Fluid retention during pregnancy can cause swelling in the carpal tunnel

What can physiotherapy do?

A full physical assessment of your upper extremities and neck would be completed to rule out other contributing factors. Treatment may include:
— Myofascial work through the forearm and hand
— Nerve flossing exercises, postural education, and strengthening to help decrease pressure on the nerve
— Night splinting to keep the wrist in a neutral position if symptoms wake you at night
— Ergonomic review of your workstation if you work primarily at a computer

If you think you might have carpal tunnel syndrome, our team can help. Call us at 519-583-0552 to book an assessment.

Did you know? A significant part of physiotherapy isn't done in the clinic.

Education and home exercise programs are a core part of physiotherapy care. Your physiotherapist will teach you how to manage your condition, what activities to do (and avoid), and how to keep progressing between visits.

The goal isn't dependence on care — it's giving you the tools to keep yourself moving well over the long term.

That wraps our PT Fact series for National Physiotherapy Month. Thanks for following along.
