Stopping the behaviour and abstaining from using the substance won't "fix" the problem. Because the problem isn't addiction. Addiction is the solution to an underlying condition that has been unbearable for a long time. So, as long as we try to address addiction by abstinence only, we will continue to see people dying from the weight of that underlying affliction which finds temporary relief in the use of a substance.
Addiction is not the substance. It's the words said, quietly, repeatedly, ruthlessly, in the head. Words reinforcing lack of worth, desperate words that form desperate sentences that loop around until they become beliefs. The tragedy is that these beliefs feel like truth but they're lies. They were born from words told, heard and practiced. At the root of all of these words is pain. A crushing pain. A pain that seeks relief offered by the substance.
But, what if the script were rewritten? What if, by becoming aware of the lies being whispered, the script could be changed.
Recovery doesn't come from helplessness. It comes from agency. If you believe you can't help it then you'll be successful at giving up and not even trying. Of course, the statement, "You can't help it" is meant to be compassionate. But, there lies the danger. Unspoken in this message is the lack of hope and the inability to take responsibility for being an active agent in one's recovery.
The Dangerous Idea:
They told you addiction isn’t your fault…
But what if that idea is keeping you stuck?
We say it to help people.
To remove shame.
To offer compassion.
But sometimes… it goes too far.
It stops being helpful and starts becoming harmful.
Because if it’s not your fault…
it’s easy to believe it’s not your responsibility either.
