Whether it’s constant trips to the doctor’s office, ‘swimmer’s ear’ in the summer, or even discomfort when little teeth pop out, ears can really be a place our kids need support. And we have that covered! Here are some of our best tips for handling the bumps in the road when it comes to healthy, happy ears (and some of them may surprise you!)

There are a lot of things that can affect our children's ears and cause discomfort:

IMMUNE SYSTEM & THE EARS
When we have immune system needs, our ears are often one of the areas affected. Whether it is from increased mucus production, pressure on the small passageways in the ears, or drainage through nasal passageways, the ears can become uncomfortable with acute needs.

These oils and products are our mainstays when it comes to immune health, which is crucial for healthy ears! Grab a few and build your support cabinet. Use the oils in roller blends (recipes below!), add to bath salts, even diffuse.

Thieves essential oil blend
Thieves is THE oil when it comes to immune health. This blend of Clove, Rosemary, Cinnamon Bark, Eucalyptus and Lemon boasts some incredible antimicrobial properties, making it a great choice for supporting the immune system.

Lemon essential oil
Lemon is a wonderful natural mucolytic, making it a great choice for both immune and respiratory support! Cleansing and purifying, this citrus oil can help break up things lurking in the chest or around the eardrum.

Frankincense essential oil
Frankincense is a powerhouse overall - antioxidants, respiratory support, and immune support! Add this oil to your chest rub, roll it on the spine, around the ears, or add to epsom salts for an immune bath.

Healthy Ears Roller
Great to have on hand for kids! Just remember to never put oils IN the ear, simply around them. Roll around the outside of the ear and down over the lymph nodes.

Use after showering and cleaning the ears as desired post swim. Roll around the outside of the ears and down the lymph nodes.

Immune Boost Roller
This blend can be used daily or more acutely as needed. For acute needs, use liberally and frequently. Consider rolling on every minute for 10 minutes, every 10 minutes for an hour and every hour thereafter. Note: for younger children you can cut the recipe in half.

When Should I Use Oils Topically?

We have been focused on diffusing this month, but there are three major ways to use our essential oils - diffused or aromatically, topically, and ingested. Some choose to use only one way while others choose to use all three. No matter how you are using the oils, they are going into your body so it is crucial to choose only high quality oils that have not been tampered with.

Topical use is often chosen with an oil when you’re working with an acute issue like something hurting or a skin problem. Oils can also be applied topically so that you can breathe them from your hands or use for brain support on the back of the neck. It’s really completely up to you!

You will hear all kinds of theories on using essential oils topically. Dilute, don't dilute. Layer, mix, rub, sprinkle, pour, feet, neck, ankles, evening, morning…AAAAAHHHHH!!!!

Want to hear my recommendation? Use the oils. In the way that works best for you and gets you great results. Because your body is completely different from mine and won't respond in the same way. Try a little and see. Remember that a little goes a long way. More is not better here. One or two drops is all you need topically and you will see much better results by using more frequently than by applying more at the time. Skin may need extra moisturizing if using oils topically.

I use oils topically all day, every day. They are in my skincare, my ointments, my soaps, and then I apply directly from the bottle often. It is a convenient and quick way to get the benefits of my oils constantly!

One of the ways I use our Bergamot this way is by applying to my wrists and temples for emotional balancing. Have you tried using yours this way yet?

Here are a few ideas and a few FAQ type solutions to questions I commonly hear:

Diluted - Mix with any fatty oil as a carrier to reduce the strength or heat and to moisturize your skin, reducing irritation. This is rarely needed when applying to the feet and is a good practice when applying to children or when trying a new oil. KidScents oils and some blends are pre-diluted. Any skincare product that contains oils is diluted by nature of there being other ingredients in the product as well.
Suggested Carriers: YL's V-6 Enhanced Vegetable Oil Complex, coconut oil, avocado oil, jojoba oil

Neat - Oils are often applied undiluted, straight from the bottle to the feet or on other areas by those who have used the oils for some time. We know our skin, our responses, and we love us some good, old, straight oil.

Layering - This is when you apply multiply oils one over the other to your skin. So I might rub frankincense and then lavender over my face. This is an effective way to use multiple oils for a different benefit than using a single oil.

Massage - Using the Young Living Massage Oils or any of your oils diluted for massage can be a great way to bring relief to sore muscles and other tension.

Bath - Oils don't mix with water so first add a few drops to around a 1/4 cup of Epsom salts and then add salts to water. You can also use oils in bath products like choosing your own to add to Young Living's Bath & Shower Gel Base.

FAQ:

Q: I started using oils and developed a rash. Is it an allergy?
A: Most often this is the result of years of chemical products that have been used on your skin and in your body. The oils begin pulling those impurities out and the skin is a giant organ able to do that. Sometimes our bodies don't respond well to topical application because of a sulphur deficiency. We need the sulphur in order to process the oil. Sulfurzyme is a supplement that can eliminate this problem. It contains wolfberry which helps you to metabolize and assimilate the sulphur you're needing. (This is not at all the same thing as a sulfa drug and your body does not respond to them the same way.)

Q: "I can't decide where to apply the oils. Which location on the body is best?"
A: Oils absorb very quickly and easily into the body. Wherever you apply them is effective. Often with topical use there is an obvious place you are needing their effects. If not, the bottom of the feet is a great place for absorption. You can also research vitaflex points for even more thorough investigation into specific locations related to your desired result.

Q: "What about using citrus oils topically?"
A: Some people have a response to citrus oils that causes sun sensitivity. They are more likely to burn or have temporary discoloration on their skin if exposed to the sun within 12-24 hours of applying citrus oils topically. For this reason, many choose to use citrus more aromatically and internally.

Q: "Can I mix my oils together and dilute in a roller ball bottle so it's more convenient?
A: Yep. You sure can. Remember that many people will have different opinions about how many to mix and how to do it. Are you getting results? Yay! Then it works for you. I'm a huge fan of Young Living's Roll-Ons like Breathe Again, Deep Relief, Stress Away, and Tranquil that I know are mixed perfectly for effectiveness.

In 2021, Young Living's Quality Control Laboratory analyzed ~20,000 samples and conducted more than 300,000 different tests on Young Living raw materials and finished products.

Located at our Distribution Center in Spanish Fork, Utah, the "QC Lab" is staffed by talented scientists who document all test results in a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS). These results are then compared to either a Raw Material Specification (RMS) or a Finished Product Specification (FPS) to ensure quality compliance.

Q: Does Young Living test essential oils from other companies?

A: Yes. Young Living R&D periodically purchases essential oils that are for sale at retail stores, online/Internet stores, etc. to help us understand and evaluate the quality of products available on the market, and to confirm our position as the World Leader in Essential Oils. We test the oils in our R&D and Quality Control (QC) laboratories and compare the results against both our Young Livinh seed to seal quality specifications and an authentic Seed to Seal essential oil standard.

For example, we purchased two peppermint essential oils from different retail brands. The first bottle was labeled as mentha piperita, "100% pure essential oil", and "GC/MS tested". The second bottle was also listed as mentha piperita, for aromatherapy use, and an "essential oil blend.”

What we found:
▪️ Both samples failed several peppermint specifications
▪️ Retail 2 sample failed aroma testing
▪️ Both samples failed high for lead content
▪️ Retail 2 sample failed high for arsenic
▪️ Both samples likely included adulteration with corn mint
