GRIZZLY ATTACK IN BELLA COOLA HIGHLIGHTS URGENT NEED FOR REAL BEAR MANAGEMENT

News out of Bella Coola, B.C. today is a hard reminder of why responsible wildlife management matters. A grizzly attack on a trail near Highway 20 left four people hospitalized, including two in critical condition, and several others treated on-site.

The B.C. Conservation Officer Service has urged residents to avoid the area as they respond to the incident.

This situation is tragic — and it’s also avoidable.

For years, hunters, conservationists, and rural communities have warned that unchecked predator numbers and politically driven bans on science-based management put both people and wildlife at risk. Grizzlies are powerful, territorial animals, and when populations grow without active management, encounters like this become far more likely.

Responsible hunting has always been one of the most effective tools for:
• Maintaining healthy predator populations
• Reducing human–wildlife conflicts
• Supporting conservation funding
• Keeping communities and outdoor users safe

As the community of Bella Coola supports those affected — including staff connected to Acwsalcta School, which will be closed Friday — it’s time for government to listen to the people who live closest to wildlife: hunters, guides, trappers, and rural families.

Science-based bear management isn’t about politics. It’s about safety, conservation, and respect for the animals we share the land with.
