Tip Tuesday
Onychoschizia (splitting/peeling or brittle nails)

Horizontal splitting or peeling of the nail plate, most commonly at the free-edge tip. It is a common condition, often caused by repeated wetting/drying, trauma, or chemical exposure (detergents, nail polish), and is more prevalent in women and with aging.

Causes
- Frequent handwashing, cleaning with detergents, cold/dry weather
-Trauma: Using nails as tools, or nail-biting.
-Medical Causes (Rare): Iron deficiency anemia, thyroid disease, or psoriasis.

Treatment and Management
-Moisture Management: Apply thick, intensive moisturizing lotions or oils to nails, especially after washing hands.
-Protection: Wear cotton-lined rubber gloves when cleaning or doing dishes.
-Nail Care: Keep nails cut short to reduce trauma, avoid harsh chemicals/polish removers, and use nail hardeners.
-Nutrition: In some cases, biotin supplements may be recommended.

Tip Tuesday Calluses

🦶Symptoms of Calluses🦶
Thick, rough skin: A distinct, hardened area of skin.
Reduced sensitivity: The area may feel less sensitive to touch.
Irregular shape: They are usually larger and less defined than corns.
Pain: Generally, they do not hurt, but they can become painful or tender if they become too thick or inflamed.
🦶Causes of Calluses🦶
Footwear Friction: High heels, tight or narrow shoes, or shoes that lack cushioning cause rubbing on the feet.
Manual Pressure: Using hand tools, playing instruments, or sports equipment causes calluses on hands.
Walking Barefoot: Regular walking without shoes can lead to thickened skin on the soles.
Foot Deformities: Conditions like bunions or hammertoes, as well as rheumatoid arthritis, create pressure points.
Lack of socks: Wearing shoes without socks.

🦶Treatment and Care🦶
Soaking: Soak in warm water for 20 minutes to soften the skin.
Exfoliation: Gently remove layers with a pumice stone or emery board.
Moisturizing: Apply lotion to keep the area soft.
Padding: Use moleskin or felt pads to reduce pressure.
Medical Care: See a podiatrist or podilogist to remove with a scalpel or credo blade.

🦶Complications🦶
Infection: Thick, cracked calluses can become infected.
Ulcers: In people with diabetes or poor circulation, a severe neglected callus can develop into an infection or open sore (ulcer).
Persistent pain: If not treated, they may cause pain that affects walking or daily activities.

Book an appointment to remove your calluses. Footlogix creams are also available.

Tip Tuesday!
Corns
A corn on the bottom of the foot (a plantar corn) is a painful, hard, thickened skin spot, often feeling like stepping on a pebble in your shoe. I remove a lot of these from my clients and they get instant relief from removing them. If you book a Spa Pedicure I do not charge for the removal of them its included with the callus removal ❤️
🦶Causes🦶
Friction & Pressure: Tight shoes, walking barefoot on rough surfaces, or activities causing repeated rubbing.
Foot Structure: Bony prominences, hammertoes or bunions
Gait: How you walk can concentrate pressure on one spot.
🦶Treatments🦶
Come see myself or another podologist or a podiatrist and we can remove them for you.
Home Treatment (for mild cases)
Soak: Soak feet in warm water (with Epsom salt) for 15-20 mins to soften skin then file gently and use a pumice stone or foot file to carefully smooth the thickened skin, avoiding bleeding.
Moisturize: Apply lotion daily.
Footwear: Wear shoes with a wide toe, good support, and proper fit.
