In 1969 Mary Kay moved into the “round” house which she and her husband, Mel Ash, built. In September of that year, the night before Seminar began, she and Mel invited the Sales Directors to come and tour their new home. The house was decorated for Christmas, and the event was called “Christmas in September.” Everyone was invited to take pictures. Two of the Sales Directors thought it would be fun to take pictures in the cream colored sunken marble bathtub, and this idea spread to others. This event before Seminar became an annual event, and a tradition arose among the Sales Directors to have their pictures taken in the bathtub.

When Mary Kay opened her home to Directors-in-Qualification during their training week, Sales Directors would advise their DIQs to have their pictures made “in the bathtub” for good luck. This admonition created a belief that if a Director-in-Qualification did not do so, she would not reach her goal.

Today, when new Sales Directors come to Dallas for their classes, a huge heart-shaped bathtub is brought into The Mary Kay Museum to ensure that this tradition is continued.
