Cree Canaries, Saskatchewan's first-ever Powwow Drum group of the year, have been denied entry at Shaw Centre by a non-Indigenous staff member who automatically accused us of lying! Further embarrassing us in front of a bunch of non-Indigenous people, he demanded IDs for all of the children, even the young children, ages 5, 6, 7, and 10 years old! Even after my 15-year-old daughter scanned all the passes, we felt that should have been good enough, but it wasn't. They said they needed IDs with the passes for everyone; that is policy! They also said they wanted to take photos of each individual child upon entry, as it's also a new policy! Mind you, that could be updated in October when we go for new passes! Overall, we were denied entry because we didn't have IDs for the kids, and they blamed us for trying to sneak in kids. This is how Indigenous people are treated at Shaw Centre! Automatically accusing us of lying based on our skin color is crazy! Next time we see the Mayor, Mayor Cynthia Block , and/or city councilors, we will tell them of how we are treated...

Cree Canaries Indigenous Youth family Drum Group was formed in the summer of 2017. Although primarily a powwow drum group, the Cree Canaries are often called upon to bring healing and honor through sacred songs to numerous Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW) events, including sacred fires, smudge walks, searches, and funerals. In 2021, following the tragic discovery of the remains of 216 children on the grounds of the Kamloops Indian Residential School, a wave of ECM memorials, smudge walks, and sacred fires took place across the country. Cree Canaries were honored to participate in thousands of these events across North America, helping communities grieve and heal. The group upholds resilience by carrying forward cultural teachings, protocols, songs, storytelling, and dances, amplifying the voices of Indigenous children who need to be heard now more than ever.
In 2024, the Cree Canaries made history as the first-ever recipients of Saskatchewan Indigenous music awards Drum Group of the Year!
