I had part of my L5 resected and then I had a break in my L4, where they removed the broken vertebrae, took a bone graph (bone from a cadaver) and fuse it with rods and screws to hold it in place.
I was in the hospital for a total of 8 days! The first almost 4, were completely excruciating. The first few days we were having a hard time controlling the pain. I was also having a hard time peeing. So I endured a lot of catheters. They kept one in for 3 days but then after that it was in and out catheters, which the nurses were ALL having a hard time finding my bladder, so you can only imagine how fun that would be the first day after surgery, physio came in to work with me and literally had to lift me to seating a position cause I wasn't able to. While they did so, I was bawling because of the pain.Soon I was able to reposition myself on my bed better, I all of a sudden could sit up on my own and finally being wheeled to the bathroom and kicked those catheters to the curb. The next couple of days, physio came back in and got 6 tiny small steps from me, all while crying through the pain.,. Finally a few days later, I was noticing me getting out of bed easier and I worked with physio again and did walk using my walker on my own to the bathroom. It just kept getting better from there! I would walk more, I would do 3 stairs, then I was doing 12, before I know it, I'm being sent home with assistance from a walker, a shower bench, and other things to assist me at home

The first few days at home were tough trying to get comfortable without a hospital bed, but my family all rallied around me and made things better for me! The first few days I slept on the couch but after that I was back in bed. Then I started to move around unassisted!! Slow but still unassisted! It was those small wins that kept me going!

I'm currently dealing with (hopefully temporary) nerve pain now in my right leg. and a sharp pain in my right lower back too that we are trying to figure it out. I see my surgeon again tomorrow to further exam things, but I still plan to be back July 7th!
