• Clients on ODSP or Ontario Works

This isn’t a promo or a gimmick. It’s simply doing my part while the Soo goes through a rough stretch.

Had no idea hanging an hours sign in my window would prove to be such an interestingly funny psychological experiment.

I created the sign once I returned to the shop full time.

Black on white, block lettering and bold. Perfect I thought.

What I had assumed was clear and simple signage turned out to be a a curious obstacle for even my most literate of customers.

I have been inundated with texts and phone calls enquiring as to why I’m only operating 3 days a week.

What are you talking about?

Your sign reads Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. How do you only work three days a week Dan?

I’m open Tuesday through Saturday as I’ve always operated and as my sign clearly reads.

No Dan, it clearly reads Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.

Fascinating thing, the human brain.

If I sent you out a text and I used the abbreviated version of ‘through’ (THRU) to explain something to you, you may have an easier time with it.

After all the abbreviated form of ‘through’ (THRU ) is commonly employed in our social media discourse and texts everyday.

I obviously used THRU on my signage to save space on the board but then this happened.

Sandwiched between Tue and Sat however, peoples' brains are simply too hard wired or primed to expect a day of the week and so are no longer able to comprehend the abbreviated ‘through’ THRU, commonplace as it is.

This error was a result of my own inability to understand the fallout of an interesting phenomenon known as ‘lexical ambiguity’

‘This error is equally a result of our brains' tendency to make predictions based on context and pattern recognition.

The pattern of days of the week creates a strong expectation, leading to a temporary misinterpretation’. (meta)

Obviously this never once occurred to me since I was the person who created it.

So to clear up any further ambiguity I have amended my sign, I am back up and operating full time and that would be Tuesday right THRU Saturday, as always, I assure you.

After a sudden and unexpected development it is my painful regret to inform you that Trevisanut's Barbershop is now, for the time being at least, closed until further notice.

Yet another successful groom and groomsmen party this afternoon. Cuts, fades, shaves, beard sculpts and great energy made for an exceptional day.
And that just about concludes the work week begun Tuesday, Aug. 1st.. Unfortunately, all and any available slots have already been filled for the remainder.

Very sorry for any snags or disappointments but Trevisanut's will then be closed until the 26th of August. Again, sorry for any inconvenience.
