This week I was scrolling through a pet group that I belong to, and came across a post from a dog owner who was absolutely distraught. Her dog had been diagnosed with pancreatitis, and she had been sent home with 4 different medications, all of them in pill form. She had tried hiding the pills in every type of food she could think of…peanut butter, cheese, meat…nothing worked.

I commented that she was going to have to physically pill her dog, and gave her directions on how to do that. She successfully managed the process and reported back that her dog was starting to feel better.

I started thinking, and wondered how many people actually aren’t aware of how to pill their pets? If you are a first time owner or have never had a sick pet, and the vet doesn’t show you how to do it, you may struggle just like this woman did.

So, here are the steps involved in pilling a dog. Save it so you can find it when you need it, and share it with your friends.

Oh, and the process is the same for cats, but you will probably need a second person to help you, and may need to burrito your cat to avoid damage from the murder mittens (aka paws with claws). I will post a graphic for cats this week.

DO YOURSELF A FAVOUR AND SAVE THIS POST SO YOU’RE NOT FRANTICALLY SEARCHING FOR IT LATER!

Did you know that skunks are more active in the fall, because they are foraging for food to build up their fat stores for winter? Also, they do not really hibernate, just sleep a lot during the winter. This means your dog could come across one at any time of the year.

They are also found in both rural and urban centres, so don’t think your dog is safe just because you live in the city.

Another fun fact, skunks are “mostly” nocturnal, so if your dog is going to make a big mistake, the chances of it being at night or on that first trip to the backyard in the morning, when stores are closed, is quite high. Do yourself a favour, buy the ingredients now and keep them on hand for emergencies.

In addition to smelling absolutely foul, if they get sprayed in the face the oil hurts the mucous membranes in their eyes, nose, and mouth, so you’ll want to address it as quickly as possible.

Doesn’t matter how long it’s been since I attended school, September still feels like the start of something new…a fresh beginning.

Do you feel that surge of enthusiasm and energy too?
