Indigenous Beauty from the Land

This year’s fall Sḵwálwen photoshoot with Big Island Photographer 🌊 held a whole new level of meaning. Having multiple generations of my family step in front of the camera as models made the day feel completely grounded, joyful, and so deeply supported.
My ancestors and family have always been such a big part of my Sḵwálwen Botanicals story 🌿

I didn't grow up in connection or relationship to wild mushrooms, but through experiences in my life and time on the land with friends and fungi experts, I have learned so much about this incredible kingdom.
I was so inspired to create my own mushroom elixir and it has become a customer favorite over the years. I absolutely love offering this seasonal treat in the fall and winter months. 🍄🍄🟫☕

Many of you shared our posts this week for Orange Shirt Day and Truth & Reconciliation and many of you found Sḵwálwen Botanicals through those posts. Huy chexw a (Thank you) for supporting our words, our work and uplifting our Indigenous business.
When I think about my inspiration it really is twofold. It's to honor my ancestors who went through Residential School who had very very painful and traumatic experiences and they came through that in a way that just showed incredible strength and love.
The second part is my children and the inspiration that I draw as a mother and now as an aunt to help provide opportunities to feel safe on the land. To ground themselves in knowledge and experience and connection to the land and to plants.
This is a time each year that I particularly honour and think about my family members that went through dark and difficult times that kept them from being able to access the grounding, the support, the incredible abundance of being in connection with the land and with culturally important plants.
For me this work is really a way of tending that wound and honoring the complexity of what it means to navigate trauma and to work towards healing, whatever that looks like. - Dr. Leigh Joseph
