Sharing this write up with permission from these great techs in our provinces! Nails & nail services are so much more than finding someone with the supplies. There is a LOT of training & chemistry involved in this industry, and that’s an important part of why we’re so passionate about helping you all find someone who’s educated, properly trained, clean, using sterilized tools, and using them safely.

Our province is one of the few where it’s left up to the public & to our fellow nail technicians, estheticians, and beauty industry professionals to hold each other accountable. That’s not right or fair to professionals OR to the public, but the Find a Nail Tech NL group & others like it exist because we WANT to help make this the best industry we can.

My heart goes out to all of those affected by the recent severe dog attacks in Holyrood and Pouch Cove.. I’m deeply concerned about the number of extreme cases we’re seeing in the news and I’ve had a lot of people ask for my take, so here goes.

It’s not the breed.

It’s not all in how you raise them.

It’s usually a combination of poor breeding and rearing practices, with a lack of socialization, exposure and training, topped off by a lack of proper enforcement of complaints/charges and owners not taking the appropriate steps when seeing the warning signs.

I have met dogs from poor breeding practices who have been raised well by lovely owners, but still had issues. I have met dogs from poor breeding practices who have been raised poorly but somehow turned out okay (case study - Leeloo ❤️). I have met bully breeds who would melt in your arms, and “friendly” breeds who have wanted to eat me. Breed alone is not enough to accurately predict behaviour.

However, I have yet to meet a dog from good breeding practices who posed a high risk to public safety.

Responsibility starts with the breeder - stop breeding dogs with poor physical and behavioural traits.

Next, the owners - do your research on the breeder or rescue organization before purchasing a dog or puppy. Ask for proof of temperament assessments, and training/rearing protocols (eg Puppy Culture). When the puppy or dog comes home - work starts on day 1, and if you’re seeing any concerning behaviours, seek help from a qualified professional.

We need to take dog behaviour more seriously, because we currently have front row seats to how things can go horribly wrong.
