ONE OF THE ORIGINAL CORNER BOYS 👊💈

The name Corner Boy Barbers wasn’t picked out of a hat — it comes from a real piece of St. John’s history.

Back in the day, especially throughout the working-class neighbourhoods of downtown St. John’s, the local corner was the meeting place. The boys would gather outside the neighbourhood store — talking, laughing, telling stories, playing, and probably getting into a little trouble along the way. 😄

They became known as the Corner Boys.

Robert Hunt’s stories of growing up in St. John’s in the 1950s and ’60s describe those same neighbourhoods, where the corner and the local store were at the centre of everyday life. Money might have been scarce, but friendship, characters, stories and community certainly weren’t.

And pictured here is one of the original Corner Boys of St. John’s — part of the generation our shop was named after.

So when you walk through the doors of Corner Boy Barbers, the name represents more than a barbershop. It’s a nod to old St. John’s, the neighbourhoods that raised generations, and the characters who made them what they were.

From the street corner to the barber chair — the stories live on. 💈
