When Physiotherapy Helps… and When It Doesn’t
Physiotherapy is powerful—but it’s not magic.
Knowing when physio helps (and when it doesn’t) actually leads to better outcomes.
Physiotherapy helps when:

❄️ St. John’s Snowstorm Reminder: Protect Your Spine ❄️
Heavy, wet snow is one of the biggest causes of back injuries we see at The Spine Centre this time of year. Before you head out to shovel, take a few minutes to protect your spine and reduce your risk of strain.
# # # 🟣 Warm Up First
Cold muscles don’t move well.
Spend 3–5 minutes:
* Marching in place
* Doing arm swings
* Gently extending your lower back
A quick warm-up can significantly reduce injury risk.
# # # 🟣 Shovel Early & Often
Don’t wait until the snow is deep and heavy. Clearing smaller amounts more frequently is much easier on your back.
# # # 🟣 Push Instead of Lift
Whenever possible, push the snow.
If you need to lift:
* Bend at your knees and hips
* Keep the shovel close to your body
* Avoid twisting — pivot your whole body instead
# # # 🟣 Take Breaks
Shoveling is strenuous activity. Rest every 10–15 minutes and stop immediately if you feel chest pain, dizziness, or unusual shortness of breath.
# # # 🟣 Switch Sides
Alternate your grip and stance to avoid overloading one side of your spine.

If you wake up with lower back pain, neck stiffness, or muscle tightness after the storm, early assessment and treatment can prevent a minor strain from becoming something more serious.
