IS MULTITASKING A MYTH?

Did you know the term "MULTITASK" came from an IBM paper in 1965?

It described the capabilities of the new IBM System/360 to process multiple tasks at once.

Since then, this term took a stronghold in social psychology. Researchers conducted a myriad of studies on the limits of the 🧠 to multitask.

Unfortunately, there was a big problem with comparing the human brain to a computer.

Can you guess what it was?

Well here’s a hint:
Some things are multitasking, YES
✅ walking while talking.
AS they’re happening at the same time.

But what people these days refer to as multitasking isn’t multitasking at all
Now this includes…
✅Emailing while watching TV

✅Listening to a podcast while working

✅Scrolling social media while hanging out with our kids

The truth is: None of this is multitasking. These tasks can’t be done at the same time.

The human brain is not perfectly analogous to a computer.

💡 Rather than, our brains switch back and forth between these tasks quickly...

creating the illusion of multitasking, and adding up to a lot of lost productivity.
When we constantly switch back and forth between tasks, our brains endure switching costs.
20 - 30 seconds are lost each time we have to refocus.
Added up over a lifetime of “multitasking,” switching costs become prohibitively expensive.
Counterintuitively, it is more productive to focus on one thing at a time.
You will finish the task faster, and do a better job.
