I am a HairStylist, MakeUp Artist, Amature Photographer & Designer, Blogger, Entrenpreneur, Wife, Lo Great experience none the less. So now what? And I did!
My career in the beauty industry started about 15 years ago when I left college studying criminology to pursue make up artistry. I graduated from Blanche MacDonald and began to work in the Independent Film industry, which is a fancy way of saying I worked for free a lot! I spent 3 years plugging away doing weddings, fashion shows, photo shoots and any indie film I could get hired onto. For 3 years
I built up my resume and was preparing to apply to IATSE, the local film union. And not for beauty make up….. I wanted blood, guts, gore, bullet wounds, aliens…..you name it. But after 3 years of very hard work I realized that that was not the life for me. You see the film industry is pretty cut throat and you always waiting for the next gig to come by, you miss out on a lot with your friends and family because you’re working when there is work to be had. This was hands down one of the most memorable experiences of my life. It taught me a lot about hard work and determination but also that I needed more stability in my life. Well in the midst of all this work I was training in airbrush make up in a small shop in Langley, BC. This was way before most people had even heard of airbrush make up. And I met a good friend of mine in that shop that was going to hair school. Hmmmmm…..looked easy enough to me. So I decided I would go to hair school and become a hairdresser for a little while until I figured out what I was really going to do with my life…….that was back in 2001. . This seemed like a great idea, steady hours and pay would afford me the time to sort out where my future was headed. Lucky for me I happen to love this industry and landed my first job in a great salon that really encouraged me to grow. I went to any hair related class I could get to! By 2001 I was a liscenced hair stylist and I got hired on at a high end Fraser Valley salon right out of school. I could not have asked for a better start! I received a lot of great training, and my passion for hairdressing was really growing. I was also very fortunate in meeting some fantastic hair dressers that I am still good friends with today. After 2 years there things were beginning to change. I found myself feeling more confident in my abilities and put my feelers out to see what other possibilities were out there….. In the mean time my family was planning a month long trip to Portugal (where my mom is from) and I needed to go. We had just sold the family business and this was the first time in 12 years we were all going on a family vacation together. This was it, my chance to make some changes! A quick trip to Europe and home again to begin my new adventure as a stylist at Michaud's and a colour technician for Rekden Canada. I aligned myself with Redken 5th Avenue NYC and signed on to train as an educator. I also chose to move to Michaud’s Salon and Wellness Center where I would have more opportunity to utilize my make up skills and also my new found teaching skills. The experience with Redken was amazing. Wonderful people, great training, and I discovered my love for teaching. I was able to do model prep for hair shows and work back stage, travel to some great salons and hair schools to teach, and I received some very valuable training. This lasted about 1 1/2 years, but the schedule was rigorous and so I decided leave Redken and focus solely on my clients. My 7 years there have were a really great time and I grew so much! I met more amazing and inspiring stylists who I learned from every day. We had had several trips to the Redken Symposium in Las Vegas learning about the latest products and trends. Not to mention all of the hair and business courses that I was able to attend or Michaud's has brought in house. I had the pleasure of mentoring several young stylists who I had the pleasure of working side by side with watching them continue to grow. My clientelle that has developed over the course of my career have kept me wanting to learn and grow more and just keep getting better at what I do. Thank you to each and every person who has supported my journey, it's far from over.........
