Double Chin Isn’t Always Fat
This photo is me after I gave birth, and it’s one of the reasons I understand why so many people come to me concerned about their “double chin.”
Here’s something important: you can be extremely fit and still have fullness under the chin. Sometimes it’s genetics, skin and soft tissue anatomy, or the natural position and prominence of the submandibular glands, not simply excess fat.
When the submandibular glands are naturally prominent, they can contribute to fullness along the jawline. This is an anatomical structure, not something that can simply be “dissolved.” Surgical removal is a much more involved procedure, and surgeons have to be extremely careful because of the important nerves, blood vessels and structures surrounding the gland.
For this reason, I currently don’t offer deoxycholic acid injections for fat dissolving in the submental area. Personally, I have not seen results that I feel are consistently impressive enough to offer it as my preferred solution.
My approach is always to first understand what is actually creating the fullness before recommending a treatment. Not every double chin is fat, and treating the wrong structure can lead to disappointing results.
