Treatable Cases
Gapped Teeth:
This occurs when the jawbone grows further than expected or when teeth are missing, and the others shift to compensate. Spacing issues can be a potential issue leading to gum and periodontal problems.
Overbite:
Dentists call an overbite an overjet. Usually caused by genetics or overdevelopment of the bone that supports the teeth, an overbite leads to teeth wear and can cause joint and jaw pain.
Underbite:
When the lower teeth protrude beyond the upper, it can prevent normal tooth function. This is usually caused when the upper jaw is undergrown, or the lower jaw is overgrown.
Open Bite:
This occurs when teeth are not able to make physical contact with others due to an abnormal jaw structure (or sometimes thumb sucking). This can cause speech problems or lead to issues such as TMD.
Overcrowded Teeth:
When there is a lack of room for all teeth to fit, overcrowding can occur. This issue may lead to crooked teeth and may make it easier for plaque to accumulate in the space between teeth.
Cross-bite:
Cross-bite occurs when the upper and lower jaws are both misaligned. One or more upper teeth bite inside the lower teeth causing wear of teeth and the higher potential for gum disease.
What are the advantages of Aligners ?
In what ways are Aligners a better choice than traditional braces? Clearly, appearance is one of the biggest advantages upfront. The typical brace pattern work across the teeth are not present. However, even more, advantageous is the lack of irritation and pain that occurs with braces against the inner lips and mouth surface. Traditional braces are not known for being “ergonomic” to the rest of the mouth. As a result, their edges and wiring often cut the mouth's inner surface, and that’s in addition to the tension on the teeth. The reduction in discomfort with Aligners is a big plus for our patients.

Orthodontics and Ibuprofen Don't Mix
Tooth & gum pain is a common side effect of most orthodontic treatments, and clear aligners are no exception. The discomfort can be particularly intense when a patient first puts on a brand-new aligner.
Over-the-counter pain medications can help, but did you know that some pain relievers can inhibit the successful movement of teeth? In a 1996 study, researchers placed orthodontic appliances on guinea pigs and tested the effects of ibuprofen (Advil), acetaminophen (Tylenol), and misoprostol. They found that ibuprofen significantly inhibited the movement of the teeth. They did not specifically test the effects of aspirin or naproxen, but those belong to the same family of NSAIDs, so it's probably safest to avoid those as well.
Fortunately, acetaminophen did not affect the movement of the teeth compared to the control group.

So, how do you know if Invisalign® is right for you? Let’s look at some of the benefits and drawbacks of this modern alignment technology.
1. Skip the Metal
Many adults looking to straighten their teeth don’t like the look of traditional metal braces, and I can see why. This hard-to-miss look is basically a right-of-passage for teenagers everywhere and can look rather out of place on an adult in a professional environment.
With Invisalign®, you can get many of the same results as braces without the wires and brackets. Although some cases are too complex for this method, about 98% of patients who come to me requesting Invisalign® qualify for treatment.
These clear aligner trays fit perfectly over the teeth, making them extremely discreet. The trays are made specially to fit your needs, and every few weeks, you’ll move on to a new tray that slowly pushes your teeth into the desired position.
2. Eat What You Want
One of the most frustrating parts of traditional braces and brackets is the “Do Not Eat” list. In order to keep your braces safe and intact, you need to avoid sticky foods, popcorn, overly crunchy foods, and foods you have to bite into.
Since the aligner trays are removable, those undergoing Invisalign® treatment can still eat the foods they love without having to worry! Just remove the aligner, eat, and then put it back in. The only downside of removable trays is the potential to forget them or throw them away, so if you are an extremely forgetful person, this might be a hurdle for you.
3. Stay Comfortable
As I said before, Invisalign® trays are made to perfectly fit your teeth. Because of this, you won’t have an issue with pesky wires poking your cheek or rubbing against your gums. Say goodbye to oral numbing creams because with this treatment you simply won’t need them!
4. Oral Health Made Easy
Because your aligners are removable, your usual oral hygiene routine doesn’t have to change. With traditional braces, patients have to use floss threaders to clean between teeth. This is tedious and time-consuming, which unfortunately leads to a lot of slacking off (especially with teenagers). Invisalign® makes it possible to brush and floss as usual, which is a huge perk.
Lastly, having straighter teeth can improve your overall oral health. An aligned bite is more structurally sound, functional, and easier to clean than a crooked smile. By investing in your smile, you’re not only investing in your happiness and confidence but also in your health and longevity.
