“Khun” (คุณ) is a Thai word used as a polite title or form of address. It’s similar to “Mr.,” “Ms.,” or even using someone’s first name respectfully. It reflects courtesy, respect, and social grace in everyday interactions.

A simple word.
Used with care.
Said with respect.

Fruits of Asia

Perfumery, for me, is not only about composition. It is about paying attention to place, culture, and the stories that live around us. There is a time to be in the lab, and there is also a time to be in the world. To observe, to listen, and to let a place shape what wants to be created.

Seemingly nothing. But could be something.

Spending a few days in Taiwan has reminded me how much of Asia is still waiting to be told in its own voice. I’m fascinated by this island. How it continues to rise by a few centimeters each year, and how its mountains, through elevation and climate, nurture such a remarkable diversity of fruits.

The more I learn, the more I want to know these materials intimately, so that one day I can work with them in perfumery and help shape stories of Asia from within Asia. Rooted in place, lived experience, and our own point of view.

Walking along the coastline of Taiwan, I noticed a cluster of bees hovering nearby and thought, there must be something worth stopping for. Up close, the flowers gave off a creamy, heady scent. Waxy, citrusy, and softly white floral. Does anyone know what this is?

Visiting a new city,
we found ourselves in this cafe.

A modern space,
with an old soul corner,
pages and petals
pulling us back in time.

Two days ago we were here
before closing.
And today, the woman said,
“Welcome back.”
Suddenly,
I felt less like a stranger,
more like a local.

Old and new,
all in one place.
The kind of place
that makes you linger.

When we left, she said
“See us again” with a warm smile.
A smile that made me feel
a sad, knowing we won’t be back.

Because we’re simply
passersby in this place
that seemed to hold back time.
