There’s a lot to talk about acne scars in this group and I just wanted to make sure we’re all on the same page so you know how to treat it! There definitely is a difference when we are talking about pink/red marks on the skin vs true damage to the skin resulting in a scar.

Post inflammatory hyper or hypo (white marks) pigmentation or for short PIH is the skin’s natural response to inflammation after a pimple. As the skin heals it overproduces melanin. PIH is flat and not considered true scaring, it’s not pitted/raised, but it’s simply darker than the surrounding skin. Discoloration can range from pink, red, purple, brown or black. While it does leave a mark on the skin it has not damaged the follicle like a true scar. PIH can fade on its own but it can take months. It depends on the how deep in color the PIH is compared to the surrounding skin.

This is when the licorice, bayberry, bearberry, mushroom extract, vitamin C, lactic acid, kojic acid products all shine. They work well for PIH.

Now true acne scarring is when there is a loss of tissue/damage to the pore/follicle causing a pitted area or overgrowth of tissue leaving a raised scar. These are often called keloids, ice pick or pock marks. Treatment for acne scars is usually more aggressive than OTC topical treatments. They can vary from laser treatments, pro derma-rolling/pen, injectable fillers, pro dermabrasion/microdermabrasion and deep peels. I recommend seeing a dermatologist or medical esthetician.
