This is Coco Hills Forest a 66 acre regenerative agro forest that over looks the east coast of Barbados and one of my favourite excursions from the Culture & Soul Retreat this past April. This is Mahmood, self proclaimed guardian of the forest. My guests and I were fortunate to be lead on a two hour hike through just a small portion of this beautiful property while Mahmood shared its history and his vision. Once a lush island, Barbados vegetation was cut down during enslavement to make room for the more lucrative crop of sugar cane, yielding up to 500 plantations on this small island at one time. Mahmoud’s vision for Coco Hills Forest is a generational regeneration project that will help restore vegetation in the form of fruit and medicinal trees, botanical herbs and lush foliage, once indigenous to the island. They’ve made leaps and bounds since they acquired the property in 2017, but there is so much more work to be done. Curated as a destination workshop, the Culture and Soul Retreat was crafted with the underlying premise and Sanskrit definition of yoga, “to yoke or to unite”. Daily practices of yoga, meditation and breath work help to realign the mind, body and spirit and excursions filled culture and historical reference help to build connection as a group and to the island and its people. This will be my third retreat in Barbados and we really have just scratched the surface of all there is to see.
