How Exercise Reprograms the Brain As researchers unravel the molecular machinery that links exercise and cognition, working out is emerging as a promising neurotherapy.
One question I get asked a lot is, "Should I roll my IT Band on a foam roller?" Now your ITB is so strong that if you put it between two pickup trucks and they back away from each other, it might stretch 1/4 of an inch! So how can foam rolling affect it? It can't. Certainly the ITB can overwork for weak hip abductors, and cause knee pain. Pick one spot on it and use a soft roller or a therapy ball to release it in relationship to the abductors. People really get worked up about this! If you feel something stretching, it's probably your lateral quad, the vastus lateralis. Using a soft foam roller can produce wonderful results. But using a hard one on the ITB is just an insult to your tissues. Understand your anatomy before you start a program of foam rolling. Use it appropriately, and you'll get good results.
