On Orange Shirt Day, we remember the deliberate attempt to erase Indigenous cultures, languages and ways of life through the Residential School system. This history is deeply personal to me, as some of my most beloved family members were sent to both Residential Schools and their painful successor, Indian Day Schools.

I think often about how much knowledge was deliberately silenced through these systems, including ways of understanding our relationship with the natural world.

One of the teachings that has stayed with me is that nature is not something we own, control, or stand above. We are part of it and in relationship with it. That idea has profoundly shaped the way I see the world and also the way I think about the things we make at Wildcraft.

Plants are more than ingredients to me. And natural skincare has always been about more than beauty. My relationship with plants and the natural world has brought a lot of meaning to my life, and that connection is at the heart of why I started Wildcraft.

Today I’m thinking about the people in my own family who lived through these systems, the generations who continue to carry their effects and the knowledge and ways of seeing the world that have survived despite deliberate attempts to erase them. I feel a responsibility to keep learning from them and carrying them forward. 🧡
