Frantz Fanon's masterpiece - the Wretched of the Earth - is perhaps the first Liberation Psychology book and published exploration of colonial violence's impact on the psyche. Born in colonial Martinique, Dr. Fanon studied medicine in France, before joining the Algerian resistance against French colonial occupation. Fanon understood that one cannot liberate the mind while keeping the body locked within oppressive social structures.
