I feel like our poor Maple Leaf has taken a beating lately. It’s been dragged down by people who want to peddle in hate and division. It’s been used as a rallying cry for people who say they champion freedom but are only interested in freedom from responsibility, freedom from community, and freedom from good citizenship. It’s been used as the “u” in “f*** Trudeau” for Christ’s sake. I don’t see it that way. I like to see this flag as a beacon of hope and prosperity for people of all walks of life. I see it as a symbol representing diversity, charity, peace, and beauty. It’s the Canada that I desperately want to live in. It’s a country that I believe in. It’s a country that hasn’t lived up to that ideal, but it’s a country that can. All we need is for these as****es that think they can corrupt this flag to move out of the way and let diversity, charity, peace, and beauty flourish.
Happy Canada Day, everyone. Take care of yourself and each other.

We cannot condone this. We cannot let these kinds of hateful attitudes and beliefs gain hold in our communities, or in our halls of government. We are Canadian, which, to me, means we embrace uniqueness and diversity. We answer the call when our family, friends, and neighbors need us to. These people that are trying to fan the flames of hate and division will not succeed because we want to live in a world where we can be who we are. Together. These angry people who enjoy chaos and discord are loud, but few.
Please stand up. Do not allow hate to guide us or to distract us. All of us belong to this community. LGBTQ2+ is not a fringe group or a separate group. These are our friends and our family and I will stand with them. Together we are strong.
I am an ally.

So, I’m late making a post in support of Pride Month because, well frankly, I just thought it would be assumed. But I just read a news story about a town called Minto in Ontario that had all their pride decorations destroyed by vandals (see the link below). I thought, ‘That’s sad, but it’s probably only a handful of mischief makers.’ Then, I read the comments attached to the story. The disrespectful, ignorant, and downright hateful comments from an unfortunately large amount of posters made me realize that posting my support of our LGBTQ2+ brothers, sisters, and others is still vitally important. “They” are not “that community.” We are this community, and we are, all of us, stronger together. Take care of yourself and each other.
Happy Pride Month.
