We hear "find your purpose" everywhere but there's a problem with that advice.

What do you do when you genuinely don't know what your purpose is?

Serve.

Service won't guarantee some grand revelation, but it gets us out of endless self-examination and into relationship with other people.

I experienced this unexpectedly when I volunteered to coach soccer.

I showed up believing there was something of value to give to those boys.

The experience changed me.

That's worth paying attention to.

Purpose may not always begin with knowing exactly where you're going, yet it begins with becoming useful where you already are.

Love God.

Love your neighbor.

Serve.

Give more than you receive.

Then pay attention to what happens inside you along the way.

The Garage doesn't tell people what their purpose is.

We create conversations where they may begin asking better questions about it.

Who can you serve today?

A trust problem isn't only about trusting other people.

The deeper question is whether you've learned to trust yourself.

A child absorbs far more than adults realize. Arguments, behaviour, tension, addiction, violence, contradictions and everything else happening inside the environment they're growing up in.

Then imagine that child trying to understand what they're experiencing.

Instead of hearing:

"Why do you feel that way?"

"What did you see?"

"What made you think that?"

They hear:

"You don't know what you're thinking."

That sentence can become a much bigger conversation later in life.

Daditude isn't here to diagnose somebody's childhood or tell them what their experiences mean.

The Garage exists to create room for the questions we may never have been asked.

What happened?

What did you make it mean?

What did you carry forward?

And what are you responsible for now?

The Garage is the environment.
The conversation is the catalyst.
The individual chooses the repair.

Sometimes the thing that helped you cope isn't meant to become your identity.

I started smoking ma*****na around Grade 9. At the time, I was sheltered, insecure, self-conscious and rarely spoke unless somebody spoke to me first.

Then I started finding my voice.

For a long time, it would've been easy to credit the substance for the transformation, but the voice was already there.

That's an important distinction inside the Garage.

We can acknowledge that something helped us through a particular chapter without pretending it remained healthy forever.

We can understand why a coping mechanism developed without giving it permanent authority over our lives.

We can examine where a behavior came from without using its origin as permission to remain there.

Something happened.
It affected me.
I can understand why.
Now I'm responsible for what I do with it.

The Garage isn't interested in erasing people's pasts.

We're interested in understanding what they built, what they're still carrying, and what they choose to do with it now.

Reciprocity isn't a transaction.

Someone gives you something meaningful and you don't necessarily "pay them back" with money.

You return it through kindness, loyalty, action, an introduction, an opportunity, your time, or by passing what you received to somebody else.

Give more than you receive, simple.

Daditude also believes responsibility belongs beside reciprocity.

Being grateful doesn't require remaining in every environment that helped shape you.

I left my hometown young because, in my experience, the environment wasn't good for me but I don't condemn everyone who stayed. It means I eventually had to take responsibility for recognizing what was destructive in my own life.

That's an important distinction.

You can honor where you came from without being required to remain there.

You can appreciate somebody without owing them unlimited access to you.

You can receive kindness and make sure that kindness doesn't stop with you.

Reciprocity asks:

"What can I give back?"

Responsibility asks:

"What am I going to do with what I've been given?"

Those are two very different questions, and we need both.

My relationship with Scripture hasn't eliminated questions. In many ways, it's created more of them.

That's part of the point.

The Bible is filled with struggle, failure, betrayal, suffering, sacrifice, purpose, redemption and repair. Whatever someone ultimately believes about Scripture, those human experiences are difficult to dismiss because we're still living versions of them today.

Daditude isn't interested in manufacturing certainty for people.

We're interested in creating an environment where difficult things can be talked about honestly, including faith.

Sometimes growth begins with understanding something.

Sometimes it begins by admitting you don't understand it yet.

The Garage is the environment.

The conversation is the catalyst.

Accountability Begins After Everyone Else Leaves.

It's easy to examine the people who failed to show up.

It's considerably harder to examine how we've been showing up ourselves.

Years ago, I was injured, far from home and expecting people I considered friends to help.

Nobody came.

The immediate story could have been about betrayal.

The more difficult story became one of self-examination:

"What did my own behavior and relationships look like leading up to that moment?"

That question doesn't excuse another person's choices.

It doesn't mean abandonment is deserved.

It means accountability requires examining the part of the story we actually have authority over:

ourselves.

That's part of what the Garage represents.

A place where an honest conversation may reveal something you couldn't see while you were busy defending yourself.
