How to Properly Wash Hair Extensions?

Hair extensions are an investment in your beauty, and to keep them looking flawless, proper care is key.
Today I’ll tell you exactly how and what to use when washing your extensions so they stay soft, shiny, and securely attached.

1. Use only sulfate-free shampoo!
Regular shampoos with harsh sulfates can weaken bonds and dry out the hair. Choose gentle, professional products labeled sulfate-free to keep everything intact and hydrated.

2. Water should be warm, not hot!
Hot water can loosen the bonds over time. Always wash your hair with warm water to protect the extensions and the attachment points.

3. Wash your hair standing up — don’t flip your head over!
This might seem minor, but it’s essential. Washing your hair upside down causes tangling, especially near the roots where extensions are attached. Wash upright, like at the salon.

4. Shampoo only your roots.
No need to scrub the length — it will clean itself with the foam running down. Focus on the scalp, and gently massage without rubbing the bonds directly.

5. Conditioner only goes from mid-lengths to ends — never on the bonds!
Hydrating products are great for your hair, but if they touch the attachment points, they can weaken them. Keep conditioner below the extensions.

6. Always dry your hair after washing.
Never go to bed with wet hair! This leads to tangling and damaged bonds. Gently blot with a towel (don’t rub!), then blow-dry on a medium setting.

What makes a bond “right”?

Not all K-tip bonds are created equal — here’s what we use and why it matters for your comfort, hair health, and overall look:

✅ Rice-shaped = no poking
Rounded, smooth bonds don’t scratch or irritate the scalp — even while you sleep.

✅Lightweight (0.6g max)

Most mass-produced K-tip extensions weigh around 1 gram per strand — which is far too heavy for clients with fine or medium-density hair ❌

In our studio, we use lightweight micro bonds weighing between 0.5 to 0.6 grams — a safer, healthier option for the majority of our clients ✅

For fragile hair or sensitive areas of the scalp, we recommend ultra-light nano bonds (0.3 to 0.4 grams) to reduce tension and ensure even weight distribution ✅
