One of the biggest things we wanted to do when we opened Shadow and Shear was host pay-what-you-can haircut days.

We feel incredibly fortunate to have our team, the stylists who work alongside us, and even stylists from other salons who volunteer their time to make these days happen. It reminds us that this industry is so much bigger than hair.

Hair gets categorized as part of the beauty industry, but for us it's about connection, self-expression, and affirming someone's identity. Yes, we get to help people feel beautiful, and we get to be part of some of the biggest moments in their lives, but at its core this industry is about people. Lately it feels like we've drifted so far toward consumerism that we've forgotten that.

Community over competition has always been one of our core values, and these days are a reminder of why.

We'll be doing these quarterly, so our next one should be in October. Stay tuned! Everything we raise goes directly to a local cause because we believe it's important to use the privilege we have to give back to our community.

Also, this isn't a paid endorsement or anything for . We genuinely love these guys. Being able to hotspot our POS and take donations seamlessly made the day so much easier, but more importantly, their values really align with ours.

Thank you to everyone who helped out

Gallery Wall is currently featuring Vancouver-based artist Jesse Craig

Jesse is a self-taught artist working primarily in oil paint. His work explores the concept of struggle—both personal and universal—through surreal, everyday scenes. Drawing from current events and lived experience, his pieces examine the tension between survival, power, and the human condition.

Currently available in the salon:

• Shake Your Tree — 16”x24”, oil on canvas
• You Did This — 16”x24”, oil on canvas
• Opps — 16”x24”, oil on canvas
• Stay Tuned — 16”x24”, oil on canvas

These pieces explore both the mundane and deeper societal struggles, and are even more impactful in person.

Come see them up close.

This space wasn’t built to be a traditional salon 🖤

It came from not fitting into those spaces in the first place.
From knowing that the usual environment doesn’t work for everyone; stylists or clients.

We kept hearing the same thing over and over.
Clients wanting somewhere they could actually feel comfortable.

Stylists burning out, wanting to do good work without the pressure, ego, or expectations that come with a lot of salon environments.

So we built something different.

A space that’s a little quieter, a little more grounded.
Community-minded, but still independent.

Where people can take pride in what they do, grow at their own pace, and not feel like they have to fit into something that doesn’t make sense for them.

We run community days, support local artists, and try to give back where we can.

It’s not perfect, but it’s intentional.

And the people here reflect that.

We’re not looking for just anyone.

We’re looking for the right fit.
Someone who’s self-driven, does solid work, and wants to be part of a space that actually means something.

A bit of a misfit, in the best way.

Not ready to rent a chair yet? That’s okay.

We’re open to commission stylists who already have a bit of a clientele and are looking for something outside of the traditional salon setup.

Less traditional, more intentional, but still rooted in strong work, accountability, and being part of the space.

A good fit for someone who wants support, but doesn’t need to be managed.
Someone who takes pride in what they do and respects the environment they’re in and the people they work with.

There’s also the option to grow into chair rental over time, if that’s something you want.

Commission details

50/50 commission - no scaling bs
20% retail commission

Flexible hours depending on your schedule
Quieter, more grounded environment with a lot of fun characters and a ton of fun

If you’ve been feeling like traditional salons don’t really work for you or that you've been too intimidated to make a big change into Independence we might make more sense.
