Post Shave: Alum Block, Facial Mist Witch Hazel, and Baker Street Aftershave Balm

Full disclosure: I got a request via Instagram from Mr. Hobbs Barbershop to test out their limited edition Sandalwood Shave Cream. The product was purchased using a “25% off” discount coupon that they graciously sent me along with free shipping (I think they provide free shipping irrespective of whether you use a coupon or not).

This classic sandalwood scented cream is different from most shaving creams that I’ve encountered so far. It doesn’t produce a noticeable lather and has to be directly applied to the face using your hands, without any addition of water or use of a brush (something that I realized was printed on the label after wasting two teaspoons of cream trying to whip up a lather in a bowl using a badger brush🤦🏽‍♂️). As it goes on dry, it lacks that slickness that a wet shaver expects from an artisanal soap, so I had to avoid multiple passes on spots devoid of the cream. After a thorough rinse at the end of the shave, though, my skin was left surprisingly supple and didn’t feel dried out whatsoever. This was by far the weirdest and most counterintuitive “wetshaving” product I’ve ever used but in a good way😊.
Apart from the $30 price tag and a short shelf-life of only 12 months once opened (something to keep in mind if you have a lot of software), this cream is something worth trying just for a unique experience.
