Today, on Orange Shirt Day, I want to take a moment to honour my grandfather, McKay Nicholas, who was a survivor of Shingwauk Residential School in Sault Ste. Marie.

He was just a young boy when he was taken away from home. At one point, he chose to leave rather than stay. He left Sault Ste. Marie with nothing but the clothes on his back, not even knowing exactly where he was going or how he was going to get home.

There were no roads for him to follow. He couldn't simply ask someone for directions or ask for help. He was just a young boy, facing the elements and making his way forward with the hope of somehow finding his way back to Kanesatake.

A child should never have had to make that choice.

My father, Allister Nicholas, also carries his own story of mistreatment. He attended the community school on the reserve, where he experienced things no child should ever have had to endure, including beatings and medical procedures performed on him without the knowledge or consent of his parents, my grandparents.

Two generations of my family were affected by systems that were supposed to educate and care for children, but instead caused harm and trauma.

These are not just stories from a history book. They are part of my family. They are part of who I am.

Today, I remember my grandfather. I remember my father. I honour what they endured, and I remember all of the children and families who were affected.
