Operation bring back the curl! 🪄


To be honest I impressed myself with how much curl we were able to achieve with this cut! 🤩

So how did we do it? 🤔 Two keys - strategic layers and styling technique.

If your curls are naturally wavy you gotta work gurl 💅to get those waves to pop. Take your fav gel and/or mousse, flip your hair forward and scrunch a BUNCH. Scrunch slowly and intentionally and pulse at the root . Cup diffuse to dry and don’t disrupt the curls until there is a solid cast. You got this! 😘

I have been thinking about this a lot lately!! I got into the curly hair world back in 2012 and back then NOBODY used brushes. It was a huge no-no back then. 😂

I personally still do finger styling on myself at home but in the salon I’ve been LOVING brush styling. My new styling brush is honestly pretty magical. 🤩

I wonder how curl styling trends will change in the next 10 years?! Any guesses? 😉

Your curls came here to live a BIG LIFE. To take up space. To bring that 👏main👏character👏energy. An honouring of your ancestors that came before you, some of which may not have had the liberty to wear their curly at all.

Whether you’re in Season 1 of your curl journey or well established, your curly life is yours to enjoy! It’s unique to you because no two heads of curls are alike.

So how do we lean into that BCE ✨Big. Curl. Energy✨ if we aren’t comfortable being seen?

➡️Tolerable Practice.💪

Basically, start by putting yourself around people and in places and spaces that feel the LEAST intimidating and build up your confidence from there. Here are some ideas:

➡️Wear your curls out around trusted friends and loved ones BEFORE you expose yourself to judgy folks (certain family members, coworkers, you know the ones 🙅‍♀️)

➡️Surround yourself with your support squad for a boost of confidence if you’re wearing your curls out around town, especially for the first time 💁‍♀️

➡️Don’t feel like you have that kind of support? No problem!!! Try wearing your curls out in NEW environments and around NEW people. For example - when traveling locally or on vacation. Strangers don’t know your hair any other way so it’s a great way to practice. 💃

⭐️Remember - as much as it feels like EVERYONE is staring, at the end of the day, everyone is focused on themselves… on their own worries and insecurities… so why not ✨just go for it?! ✨ I know for a FACT that when you have the confidence to wear out your curls, you are inspiring other curlies to do the same. It’s the curl effect.

Lastly - on days your really don’t want to be perceived, a touque or hat does wonders. 🥸

I remember when I first discovered gel. The control. The CRUNCH. The power. Maybe you can relate?

Soft, touchable curls were not a thing in my world at that time. 🙅‍♀️ My hair felt so out of control, so foreign, so AGAINST me that I just needed it to do WHAT I WANTED. I needed it to behave. I needed to lock it down.🔒It was (as you can imagine) a losing battle, but I was going to fight it anyway.

As the years went by, and especially once I moved to the Island, I felt that desire to control my hair began to soften. 🌿

I didn’t want to worry about my curls ALL OF THE TIME. As I began to soften, I started to develop a more gentle and loving relationship with my curls. 💕

I let my curls begin to dance with the elements around me. Allowed my curls to be a little imperfect, a little wild. 🐺

✨Allowed my curls that freedom.✨ This process took time, but it was liberation.

Nowadays, I wouldn’t trade the feeling of wind caressing my curls for anything. The feeling of mist on my skin because I like to embrace a little frizz.

Living with curly hair on the West Coast is an art. A balance of caring for our curls, wanting them to look good, but also releasing a degree of control. This process looks different on everyone, but the key 🗝(I believe) is learning to release perfectionism and lean into our Wild. 🌲🌊🌿

The natural beauty that surrounds us here on the island is truly something special. ✨

When we live in big cities it’s easy to disconnect from nature. To curate and contain our living experiences and, in many ways, ourselves. But here - with forests, mountains, and the sea on our doorstep - it’s truly a joy to connect with the natural world. 🍃

When we wear our hair curly we honour our ✨own✨ natural beauty. A beauty that is crafted by Mother Nature herself and coded into our biology. A beauty that is perfectly imperfect and unique to us.

We give ourselves something truly precious when we allow ourselves to be fully immersed in nature’s embrace - rain misted curls and all. This connection to nature is part of the beautiful experience of living life here on the West Coast. 🌊🏔🌲🍃

➡️My advice is to start with your “why.” Why do you want to embrace your natural curls? Maybe it’s to model self love to your kiddos, or to break free of the outdated beauty standards you grew up with. Everyone has their reasons, and the deeper you can connect to them will help you push through the awkward first stages of wearing your hair curly. (Seriously, it can be like a second puberty 😅)
