Not every run needs to leave you exhausted to be effective.
Sub-symptom threshold Zone 2 cardio is all about working with your body — not against it.
This type of training keeps your heart rate at a level where symptoms (like pain, fatigue, or flare-ups) don’t spike. You’re moving, breathing a little heavier, but still able to hold a conversation.
So what’s happening here?
At this intensity, your body is:
• Building a stronger aerobic base
• Improving how efficiently you use oxygen
• Supporting nervous system regulation
• Increasing circulation without overloading tissues
For people dealing with injuries, persistent pain, or returning to activity — this is a powerful sweet spot.
The benefits:
• Better endurance without setbacks
• Reduced symptom flare-ups
• Improved recovery between workouts
• Supports long-term consistency (which is what actually drives progress)
This isn’t about pushing harder — it’s about training smarter.
If you’ve been stuck in the cycle of “do too much → flare up → rest → repeat,” this approach can help break that pattern.
Your body adapts best when it feels safe.

Caledon Crusher 25km trail race was a blast this past weekend!
Long distances, uneven terrain, climbs, and descents — trail running places a unique demand on the body. But it’s not just runners who deal with these physical stresses.
Many people can experience similar strain in different ways:
• runners logging mileage on trails or roads
• trades workers lifting, carrying, and working in repetitive positions
• factory and warehouse workers on their feet all day
• office workers dealing with prolonged sitting and postural tension
Over time, these demands can lead to:
• accumulated fatigue
• reduced mobility
• compensation patterns
• small aches that gradually become bigger issues
This is where massage therapy can help.
Treatment isn’t just about relaxing tight muscles — it’s about helping your body:
✔ recover from physical demands
✔ maintain mobility and control
✔ manage pain before it becomes limiting
✔ stay consistent with work, training, and daily life
No matter how your body is being stressed — taking care of it matters.
If something has been lingering or holding you back, it might be time to address it.

Not All Pain Is the Same
Many people think pain always comes from a muscle or joint—but that’s not always the case. Current evidence can explain why pain can come from different tissues in the body.
Here are three common types of pain I often assess in treatment:
1. Muscle & Joint Pain (Musculoskeletal)
This is the most familiar type of pain.
Examples:
• Tight shoulders from desk work
• Stiff necks
• Sore backs after lifting or training
This pain often responds well to: • Massage therapy
• Movement and mobility work
• Load management
2. Nerve-Related Pain (Neurogenic Pain)
Sometimes pain comes from irritation or sensitivity in the nervous system rather than the muscle itself.
Signs it might involve a nerve:
• Burning or sharp pain
• Tingling or numbness
• Pain that travels down an arm or leg
• Symptoms that change with certain movements or positions
This is where concepts from neurodynamics research (like Shacklock’s work) help clinicians understand how nerves move and respond to stress in the body.
3. Inflammatory or Tissue Irritation
This type of pain is often more sensitive and reactive.
You might notice:
• Swelling
• Warmth
• Pain even with light movement or pressure
In these cases, treatment focuses on calming the tissue and gradually returning to normal activity.
Why This Matters
Understanding what type of pain you’re experiencing helps guide the right treatment approach.
Two people can have shoulder pain—but need completely different care.
If you’re dealing with ongoing pain, a proper assessment can help figure out what’s actually driving it.

Acupuncture can be an effective tool used within massage therapy treatments to help treat musculoskeletal and joint pain/dysfunction.
In short: acupuncture helps your body shift from a “stressed and guarded” state toward a “healing and recovery” state.
If you’re curious about whether acupuncture could help you, feel free to reach out or ask questions.

Why injured tissue can become stiff or “contracted”
When your body heals an injury, it sends signals to repair the area. One important signal is TGF-β1, a chemical messenger that helps coordinate healing.
Here’s the simple version of what happens:
Step 1: Repair mode turns on
TGF-β1 tells certain cells (fibroblasts) to become myofibroblasts — special repair cells that can actually pull tissue together to close wounds.
Step 2: Tissue tightens
These repair cells create tiny contractile fibers (similar to muscle fibers) and pull on the surrounding tissue to stabilize the area.
Step 3: The feedback loop
As these cells contract, they release more TGF-β1, which signals even more contraction and tissue repair.
When healing goes too far
If this process continues for too long, it can lead to:
• Increased tissue stiffness
• Scar tissue buildup
• Reduced mobility
• Conditions like frozen shoulder or contractures
Where massage therapy may help
Manual therapy and movement can help support healthy tissue remodeling by:
• Encouraging mobility
• Reducing excessive stiffness
• Supporting circulation and tissue health
Healing needs tension — but too much tension can lead to restriction. Finding that balance is key.
