Speaking of people behind the scenes - Mark has been the backbone in the development and design of our continuously enhancing startrends website. As Mark is based in Dubai, collaborating with him is yet another example of the cross-global nature in which we exist and operate! Here, we get to know a bit more about Mark, Dubai, and The Philippines:

Aside from working on computer related projects, what do you enjoy doing for fun?

M: I really enjoy playing music with friends. I play drums so most of the time you'll see me tapping fingers and kicking heels.

How long have you lived in Dubai, and what's something you've learned about Dubai that others probably wouldn't know?

M: It's been almost 3 years and I can say that Dubai is a diverse place. I enjoy meeting people from different cultures.

Where are you from in the Philippines? And what's a "fun fact" (or something of pride) about that place that you'd like to share?

M: Although I was born in Manila, I grew up in different places in the Philippines: Alabang, Cavite, and Makati. In Makati, there is a place where the Baranggay are similar, Cembo, Comembo, East Rembo, Pembo, South Cembo and West Rembo (notice the suffix).
Little did I know, our place was once a home of Philippine Army during 1950's and here's the fun fact: the names are acronyms!

Cembo - Central Enlisted Men's Barrio
Comembo - Combat Enlisted Men's Barrio
Rembo - Riverside Enlisted Men's Barrio
Pembo - Panthers Enlisted Men's Barrio
So yeah it's quite cool to know the origin of our place. :)

October marks a special time for the people behind startrends.

Founding designer, Stephany, shares a bit on why:

"About two years ago, what was supposed to be a blissful, uneventful trip to the ocean (actually, a honeymoon), within seconds, turned almost inescapably dire... To add some context:

This picture shows the beautiful ferocity of the Indian Ocean - the same ocean, deceptively, that has riptides that can swallow up unprepared vacationers.. like me. All of a sudden, I felt I was being sucked further and further from the coast, despite my efforts to swim through the waves.

Fortunately at the right moment, the technique of swimming parallel to the coast came to mind, and slowly but surely, I made it back to the sand, heart uncontrollably beating.

Realizing - that in just a few snaps, "everything" can change... The fragility of life itself. Asking myself - after moments like that - what really is there to fear?

It was the wake-up call to stop postponing my childhood dreams - creating, designing, and striving to make a positive difference.

It then made the most sense - startrends needed to happen.. (And a few months later, with a trip to the Bronx County Clerk's office, we made it official!)

But, you don't need to have a near-death experience to have a breakthrough. I believe that it's experience and knowledge sharing like this, that can help to give meaningful perspective to uplift and to inspire one another. And, honestly, that's the main reason why we startrends..."

Have you had an experience that gave you a much needed awakening? We'd love to share in your mind-opening experience!

It has been said that life is what happens you're busy making plans... In our case, the move to Chile is what has happened! Similar to the opportunity to live in the Middle East, the move to South America was a bit of a surprise, yet - already we sense pulsating possibility!

While it was Doha that provided the catalyst to begin, and Dubai which provided the initial knowledge and validation to continue, we eagerly anticipate the opportunities to add value in and from Santiago! ...And none of this could be possible without you! You rock!
