Building a healthy Afro textured hair Mentality.
A lot of people in the last 5 years have gone natural. Communities have been formed and hash tags are in order on all social media platforms. This has brought so much attention to the afro textured hair - promotion, admiration, stereotypes, myths, controversies and opinions about the type 4 hair. All this can overwhelm a natural and without a healthy hair mentality you can become underpowered and frustrated in your natural hair journey. I have been a natural for 2 years 6 months and still counting, within this short period I have built a healthy hair mentality around this journey and here are some key points that can help with yours.
Tone down your expectations
Not all type 4 hair is the same. Most newbies always fall into the trap of worrying about why their hair doesn't look like someone else’s, why their hair shrinks, why their hair cannot keep a style for long, why their curls are not that defined, why their hair isn't dark enough, why their hair doesn’t keep moisture or why their growth rate is significantly slow. Our hair is different so you have to take time and study your hair and accept it for what it is. All hair is beautiful. The moment you start wishing yours was like someone else’s, you fall out of love with your hair and you become unhappy.
Tip: Accept your hair for what it is. If you can improve something about it, go ahead.
Care less of what the society thinks.
Care less about what people think of your hair. As I said earlier all hair is beautiful but very different at the same time. Some people may tell you natural hair isn’t your thing but it is attached to your head so how is it not your thing? It makes no sense. Simply because your hair doesn’t meet their expectation or bring much admiration like other type 4 hair doesn’t mean you should move a muscle or be bothered. Look for the strengths in your hair and take pride in it. For example, my hair shrinks like crazy but when it comes to definition and coils it pops. Detox your mind from all negative energy.
Note: Take pride in your strengths and build on it. Your hair doesn’t need to be fixed. It is society’s view of beauty that is broken.
Patience is a Virtue
If there is one thing being a natural has taught me is that type 4 hair needs patience. If you are planning on doing your big chop or you are in the early stage of your hair journey like me, patience is a must have in order to keep up with the demands of type 4 hair. Our hair needs a lot of attention, care and pampering. You have to create time for detangling, washing, conditioning, styling and maintaining your hair. Sometimes I go to bed without putting my fro in twist or braids and I wake up with my hair shrunk and tangled just because I didn’t have the patience for it. So it is very important as a natural to be patient.
Note: Patience is key when growing your natural hair.
Seek Knowledge
Learn about your hair characteristic - porosity, texture and density and what each characteristic needs in order to blossom. Taking time to study your hair will help you to narrow down the things that work for you and those that don’t. You will also be selective with the vast material of natural hair present on the web because you know what you are looking for.
Tip: Not all regimens are good for you. With increase in knowledge and several failed experiments you would be able to build a regimen that works for you.
Hair grows when you are not looking.
Long hair is like the ultimate goal for naturals. It’s all about the length honey, getting that back length, shoulder length, butt length or whatever your target is at the moment. Growth rate is affected by age, genetic and health conditions so do not beat up yourself if your growth rate is low, It could be a result of any of the 3. It is tempting to overestimate how long our hair can grow in the short run and underestimate how long it can grow in the long run. Truth is hair grows when you are not looking.
Tip: Commit to your regimen and let your hair grow.
Be in touch with your kinky mates.
The most exciting part of my hair journey is knowing that I am not alone. It just gives me joy to know that I’m part of a community with whom I share something in common. A community that inspires me to commit to my hair gaols. So what are you waiting for?start connecting with your kinky mates, get to discuss your challenges, your goals, your expectations, your victories, exchange ideas and journey together.
Tip: The journey is easier and exciting when you are not alone.

Hair Shaming - We need to Stop.
Curl shaming is when a person criticizes or puts down someone for their natural hair texture, possibly causing them to feel insecure about their hair
I had an event where I had to do a Natural hair exhibit and I was looking for people with natural hair to volunteer. As I reached out to people, they sent me contacts of ladies with natural hair. There was this particular lady that was recommended but then the person recommending her had a second thought and told me I couldn't work with her hair. I got curious because the point of the whole hair exhibit was to showcase different types of hair with varying textures and volume so I was open to work with any kind of hair. So I got even more interested with working with her hair. To tell you the truth her hair wasn't bad. She just had a bad perception about her own hair and was a victim of hair shaming. The thing about hair is if you show it some love and attention, it will bring you love and attention. There is absolutely no way you can improve on something you don't care about. When you start caring for your hair, you will find lots of ways to make it better.
Internalized texture shaming – This is when you don’t love your hair the way it is and wish it was like someone else’s. I don't have the best hair in the world but I treat my hair with love and respect and that same energy is transferred to others, it's like God's glory - it reflects and suddenly everyone thinks you have great hair. Yes you may naturally have great hair but the point is you have to teach people how to treat you and that applies to your hair as well. If you yourself keep shaming your hair, you are giving others permission to do same. So just stop it. Learning to love your hair can change how others perceive your hair and you as a person. You keep telling yourself -
“ I'm just managing this hair."
"My hair is not nice."
"I don't like my hair."
" My hair shrinks a lot."
"My hair is strong(like coucha banga)",
"my hair doesn't grow"
“I don’t have curl definition like other girls”.
You have this tiny voice inside your head telling you to perm your hair. These thoughts and sayings are powerful and can hurt a naturals self-esteem, especially a new one. No your hair may never look the same as someone else's but it’s yours. Accept your hair for what it is and love it. Speak positive hair comments to yourself such as “I'm slaying this hair style”, “these edges are the bomb”, “my twist out is popping”
Societal texture shaming – This is the shaming of one’s natural hair from society including the internet, your peers and even close family members. They will say stuff like “can’t you relax your hair”, “did you comb your hair today”, "what kind of hairstyle is that”, “when are you going back to relaxers”, “are you going to wear your afro out like that”. To those who shame others knowingly or unknowingly, know that Hair shaming is a a form of psychological and emotional abuse. The person being shamed is demoralised and they feel so bad about their hair. There are somany people who have developed values, principles and virtues (like patience, love, loyalty, trust etc) because of their natural hair journey and once you look down on their hair (what they identify with )you risk living them crushed and broken. If you know anyone who doesn't have great hair according to you please do not shame them. You may not realize it, but every time you say something negative about someones hair, it has psychological consequences. Speak positive things like “your curls are popping today”, “edges on fleek”, “yes girl wear your afro” or better still mind your business.

Chebe butter is now available. For those who are not comfortable fitting the application of chebe powder into their hair routine, Chebe butter is a good alternative as it has other additives. Chebe butter can be easily applied to the hair compared to chebe powder.

Let's talk about Hair Porosity. For those of you who have never heard of this, porosity is a fancy way to describe the rate at which your hair can absorb moisture/ products or the measure of your hair's ability to absorb and hold moisture. Your hair can have low porosity, medium porosity or high porosity.
Let's look at the various types of hair porosity in detail
- Low porosity hair has a tightly bound cuticle layer, making it difficult for moisture to come in and out.
- High porosity hair has gaps in the cuticle which allows moisture to easily pe*****te and easily leave the hair.
Check out the image on hair porosity
So how do you know your hair porosity?
The float test is one of the methods of determining your hair porosity. Pick a strand of your freshly washed dry hair, put it in a glass of water and watch how the strand of hair behaves.
Check out the image on the float test.
What kind of products should you use based on your hair porosity:-
Low porosity- since this hair is moisture resistant but also difficult for moisture to escape, if u succeed to get the moisture in you don't have to worry about dryness.
This hair needs products like honey that attract moisture. Jojoba oil, Shea butter, coconut oil etc
With low porosity hair, If you use heavy products you will have product build up on your hair since your hair can not absorb all of that. So use lighter liquid based products for your hair and protein free conditioners, avocado conditioners
Medium Porosity: This hair allows a steady flow of moisture in and out. It can be easily styled... frequently treating it will change the porosity and it will be difficult to style over time.
Avoid protein in your daily regimen
Avocado conditioners will work well for this hair too
High Porosity: this hair easily gets dry and has a lot of frizz and tangling in humid weather. You need products that will seal the cuticles when places are humid to prevent them from absorbing too much moisture... Like raw Shea butter, Virgin olive oil coconut oil.
Use Leave in conditioner's and moisturizers and use sealers like avocado oil to retain the moisture and prevent dryness.
This type of hair needs lots of oil.
Do the float test now and know your hair porosity.
Mind the kind of products you put on your hair, your hair may not love it
If you still have issues determining your hair porosity, leave me a message or drop a comment.
