BACK-TO-SCHOOL SAFETY RULES FOR EVERY CHILD

Parents, before you send your children back to school, please talk to them

As our children prepare to return to school, let us remember that education is important, but safety comes first. With the disturbing things happening in some communities across Cameroon, parents cannot afford to assume that “my child knows what to do.”

Please sit down with your children and have an honest conversation.

TEACH THEM ABOUT STRANGERS
Tell them not to follow anyone anywhere simply because the person claims to know their parents, teachers, family members or friends.

TEACH THEM ABOUT SECRETS
Tell your children that no adult should ask them to keep secrets from their parents, especially secrets involving touching, gifts, money, threats or private meetings.

TEACH THEM ABOUT THEIR BODIES
Make your children understand that their bodies belong to them. Nobody has the right to touch their private parts or make them touch someone else's body.

TEACH THEM TO SPEAK UP
Tell them: “If anyone makes you uncomfortable, threatens you, touches you wrongly or asks you to do something you don't understand, COME AND TELL ME. You will not be punished for telling me the truth.”

Sometimes children remain silent because they are afraid their parents will beat or blame them. Let home be their safest place to speak.

KNOW THEIR MOVEMENT
Know when your child leaves school, who they are going with, where they are going and approximately when they should arrive home.

BE CAREFUL WITH TRUST
Not every person who is friendly to your child is safe. Unfortunately, danger can sometimes come from people children already know and trust. Teach children to recognize inappropriate behaviour rather than simply telling them, “Don't talk to strangers.”

TEACH THEM WHAT TO DO IN AN EMERGENCY
Make sure your child knows how to contact you and at least one or two trusted adults if they feel unsafe. If they are old enough, teach them important emergency contact numbers.

WATCH FOR CHANGES
A child who suddenly becomes withdrawn, fearful, aggressive, secretive, refuses to go to school, has unexplained injuries or seems unusually anxious may be trying to communicate that something is wrong.

Listen. Don't dismiss them. Don't immediately accuse them of lying.

And parents, please remember:

👉🏽 Give your children love, but also give them knowledge.
👉🏽 Give them discipline, but also give them a voice.
👉🏽 Give them education, but teach them how to protect themselves.

Most importantly, tell them every day:

“You can always come home and tell me anything. I will listen to you. I will believe you. I will protect you.” ❤️

*MPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT*

Good evening to all the BALBH Ladies present in this forum. I trust everyone is doing well in her respective corner.

On behalf of the BALBH Ladies, I am sending this message to draw the attention of all members, especially those who have gone silent and are no longer participating in the activities of the forum.

BALBH is a social gathering and we do not place financial pressure on our members due to the situation of the country. However, when situations arise, we expect every member to show at least a little concern and solidarity.

Sadly, last month we lost one of our active members in Kumba due to an accident which led to her untimely passing. This is the first member we have lost since the creation of this group about nine (9) years ago snd it calls for all of us to stand together and do the needful.

The BALBH Ladies have resolved to support the family by providing a dress for her burial. To this effect, we are calling on all members to contribute the sum of 5,000 FCFA each to support this initiative.

All BALBH Ladies in the South West are expected to mark their presence in Kumba, and two (02) ladies(volunteer) will accompany the co**se to her hometown, Mamfe, for burial.

This is a moment for us to show the world that we are truly "our sister’s keeper."

We kindly expect every lady to acknowledge and react after reading this message.
