When I speak of sickle cell and highlight the phrase “love is not enough” this is because I got involved in a taboo💔.

What I am about to say DOESN’T only sound daft as the word itself, it is equally sacrilegious and a perfect definition of a love so genuine to end😎.

Years ago, I met this pretty lady back in secondary school and I could swear she was made for me. Cuz eh that babe show me love aaaaaah 😩. It was so genuine that it felt like a dream.

She was smart, pushful and super inquisitive and it was her high level of curiosity that made me(us) realize we were becoming a taboo than a ship.

One faithful Saturday, I invited her over for lunch at one of our local food joints and as a guy man I packaged myself and was looking all fly just to go stain my outfit😥. Who sent me to wear my brother’s shirt oh🤷🏻 anyways let’s continue..

The date was schedule for 2 PM since it’s Saturday and we have to do our laundry before our parents can let us step out so I got there 15 mins late since I needed to borrow money from our store so the date can work well😎. As a man I g*t pay bills😆.

When I got there she was standing outside waiting for me instead of going inside so I quickly apologized and cleared the way for her like a proper gentle man would. Come see me for my gentle man mood you go awwww tire😂

“Mami give me fufu 400, 2 canda(200), 2 meat(200)” I said as I raised my shoulder high in a pose of pride. Whence, I gently asked my babe to place her order too.

As a soft odogwu babe she asked for friend rice and chicken so her plate cost 1k thats chicken 500 then fried rice.

It might sound childish but to me it was a date and although we sat adjacent to each other, I choose to think of it like a date with candle’s and rose petals on the floor cuz why not me sèf deserve fine things🤣🤣

As we ate, it rained compliments then boom like dynamite, her curiosity stepped in and she started attacking me with deep questions I didn’t have answers for so I said a lie that sounded smart till she got to the point of genotype😢.

Tina : Boris I am s!ck

Me : Is it malaria? Did you take drùgs? Finish let me go and see you off.

Tina : I am fine now but I am síck.

Me : I am not understanding you how can somebody be sick and still be fine?

Tina : I am a sickle cell patient.

At that point, my breath seized for a minute and I became instantly pale. My tummy was grumbling and my heart fumbling.

Me : Sickle cell survivor?

Tina : Yes I was diagnosed from birth so my mum has been managing it.

Me : Who told you that you are a sickle cell? When having your crisis do you feel sharp constant piercings and the joint eating up?

Tina : Yes I experience those but how did you know? Do you know about it?

Me : No, I have a friend who use to have it so he thought me.

Tina : Oh I see, so what do you have to say.

Me : I don’t even know what to say truly why didn’t you tell me since?

Tina : My parents say I shouldn’t tell anyone they will insùlt me

Me : So you are truly a sickler?

Tina : Yes and I am sorry i didn’t tell you since. Please forgive me.

Me : It’s okay I forgive you.

Tina : Are you sure babe? Please don’t leave me cuz of this

Me : Don’t worry I won’t leave. I promise you I won’t leave.

Tina : Thank you so what is your genotype 🤷🏻.

This was the first time I was scared to say my genotype. It felt wrong and some part of me figured she deserves a response so yeah instead of answering the truth at that point, I LIED!

I lied not because I wanted to but because I wasn’t ready to lose what we had but as time went on. I had to bail out of the relationship not because she was bád or anything but because I understood the dangers involved

Overtime I couldn’t deal with guilt as I realized I was being w!cked to the future kids and I had to make a decision and now that was how I had a mutual split breakup at 17 year old🥲.

Well, my case was two SS dating so we had to breakup whether she was everything I wanted or not we found ourselves in a genotype mismatch.

If you have read till this point take a moment to recess your relationship and the genotype.

SS + SS = NO ❌
SS + AS =NO ❌
AS + AS = NO ❌
AS + SC = NO❌
SC + SC = NO ❌

Trust me love is never enough, sickle cell k!lls the mind and and causes your body to wither in pain and finally give up to the fall of your organs and weak immune system.
