At least 51 migrants are dead or missing after a boat heading toward Europe capsized off the coast of Libya, a migrant monitoring group said Friday.
The tragedy reportedly occurred on June 12 in the Mediterranean Sea, off eastern Libya.
According to the Abreen group, which tracks migrant movements in eastern Libya, 10 people survived the shipwreck. Eleven bodies have been recovered, while 40 others remain missing.
The Libyan coast guard and the Red Crescent in Tobruk said bodies had begun washing ashore over the past 24 hours. Footage shared by the coast guard showed rescue teams carrying bodies in white bags onto the shore.
Libya remains one of the main departure points for migrants from Africa and the Middle East trying to reach Europe. Many are packed by smugglers into overcrowded and unsafe boats, making the Mediterranean crossing one of the world’s deadliest migration routes.
According to the International Organization for Migration, more than 800 migrants were reported dead or missing on the central Mediterranean route between January 1 and May 16 this year. More than 1,300 died or disappeared on the same route last year.
Human rights groups have repeatedly raised concerns over the treatment of migrants intercepted at sea and returned to Libya, where many are held in detention centres accused of widespread abuses.
