【Minsheng Lecture】“Moving Institutions” and Their Construction

▍About the Lecture
Since 2010, a growing number of artists have been imitating the functionality and operational mode of today’s institutions by means of media-based tools, producing participatory artworks and creating new definitions, exhibitions, research, educational activities, and other functions dedicated to the continuation of the life of an artwork, e.g. of contemporary art institutions. These works are usually low-cost, front-line guided, structurally simple, and flexible, and exist in forms of “viewing”, “planning” or “projecting”; in short, they are “Institutions of Action”.

These “institutions” use the white cube format to claim legitimacy. By their changing shapes or formless appearance they become “utopias”. Nowadays, a mechanism of equal dialogue between society and individual (e.g. the artist) is being sought after. To realize this, many artists take their own initiative to create an economic mode which corresponds to the commercial context—a mode which creates an equal dialogue. The institutions are thereby becoming small agencies of art.

But whether these “institutions” are also merely meeting cultural demands and thereby in the end assume the “pseudo-forms” of “institutions” is left unanswered. Do these “institutions in action” offer hope? Is their form of existence and form of work representative and does it provide an example for art institutions of the future? How will similar structures develop in other countries? How will artists react to the construction of institutions under the influence of differing societal parameters?

The April 12th panel at the Minsheng Museum of Modern Art will feature a panel of guests including: Mr. Johan Holten, director of the National Art Gallery Baden-Baden and expert on the “power of art in in the process of the building of civil society”, Mrs. Chao Jiaxing, curator of the current exhibition series “institutions in action” at Goethe Open Space, as well as Mrs. Ye Funa, whose work is featured in the first installment of “institutions in action” the first exhibition in at Goethe Open Space in 2016. Mrs. Rebecca Catching, Executive Director of the Assembly Line project and co-founder of the online art magazine Ran Dian, will act as chair. The topics of discussion will include artist’s work in the context of institutional construction in an international context.
