Post-operative lymphatic massage can be a gentle way to support comfort and recovery when performed safely and with appropriate medical clearance.

For this client, who was seven days post-operative from upper-back surgery, I carefully adapted the client’s positioning and used light, specialized techniques designed to support superficial lymphatic flow and help manage postoperative fluid retention and swelling.

Lymphatic drainage does not involve deep pressure or direct manipulation of nerves. Instead, it uses slow, rhythmic movements on the skin and superficial tissues to encourage the natural movement of lymph. Every treatment is individualized, and safety comes first. I always consider the client’s surgical instructions, healing stage, comfort level, and contraindications.

Post-operative massage should be performed by a qualified, trained professional and only with approval from the client’s surgeon or healthcare provider. It is not a substitute for medical care, and techniques should never be applied over open wounds, incisions, infection, unexplained swelling, or areas that have not been medically cleared.
