What is SPF? How to choose a good sunscreen
SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. It is simple and clear. But there are different versions about what SPF 30 or SPF 50 means. Let's see which one is correct. It's safe to say that the Internet version of "SPF 30 means you can be in the sun for 30 minutes, and with SPF 50, respectively, 50 minutes" is not correct. In professional literature for beauticians you can find the following interpretation: SPF number indicates what percentage of the sunlight absorbs the cream. Thus, SPF 15 retains 93% of the radiation, SPF 30 - 97%, and SPF 50 absorbs 98% of the sun's rays. However, even this version is not accurate. The correct deciphering of UV protection figures relies on the concept of EDR - the minimum erythemic dose. That is, if you get burnt in the sun for 5 minutes without sanscreen (that is your EDR), then with SPF 30 you can stay in the sun 30 times longer - 150 minutes.
