Queen Elizabeth II, the second-longest reigning monarch in history, has died. She was 96.

"The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon," the Buckingham Palace said in a short statement on Friday, Sept. 9 (Manila time).

Ascending to the throne in 1952 at the age of 25, the beloved British monarch ruled longer than any of her predecessors, inheriting a United Kingdom still rising from the ashes of the second world war.
