Today is International Mother Language Day – and on Rapa Nui, this day even has its own name: He Mahana o te Re'o Tumu Matu'a. The day of the original, maternal language.
This day of remembrance traces back to what is now Bangladesh: in 1952, students took to the streets to fight for the right to speak their mother tongue – and paid for it with their lives. Today, the 21st of February is observed around the world as a reminder of linguistic diversity and cultural identity.
For us at Anakena - Natural Cosmetics, this is anything but an abstract occasion. Our brand was born on Rapa Nui, where our Chilean company is also based. The language of the island once came close to disappearing entirely – today it is being deliberately revived, taught in schools, and carried forward by a growing community.
Language is more than communication. It holds history, identity, an entire way of seeing the world. And sometimes, against all odds, it survives.

One of the most important cultural celebrations in all of Polynesia takes place in February – on the most isolated island in the world.
From February 3rd to 14th, 2026, Rapa Nui – Easter Island – becomes a living tribute to its own heritage. For two weeks, the entire community sets aside daily life to celebrate something that goes far beyond a festival – it's the living expression of a culture thousands of years old.
Tapati Rapa Nui isn't a show for tourists. It wasn't created for the outside world. It was born to preserve and pass down the traditions of the Rapa Nui people – from generation to generation, from heart to heart. And that's exactly what makes it so unique.

“Vai Maŋaro” is the theme of Tapati Rapa Nui 2026 and literally means “sweet water” or “freshwater” in the Rapa Nui language. It honors the ancestral hydraulic system “Ava Raŋa Uka a Toroke Hau”, an engineering feat by the ancient Rapanui for water collection. This theme has been beautifully implemented on the stage design in Hanga Vare Vare by local Rapa Nui artists.
This concept symbolizes fertility and the wisdom of the ancestors in managing scarce resources. It refers to channels and facilities that collected and channeled rainwater, essential for agriculture and survival.
Easter Island has no rivers or streams due to porous volcanic soils that quickly absorb rainwater. The indigenous people used subtropical groundwater discharges along the coast, small cisterns (Taheta), and possibly brackish sources as drinking water.
These innovations enabled a large population despite isolation; studies show that Ahu (Moai platforms) were often built near freshwater sources. Water was central to settlements, Moai construction, and rituals, often as a symbol of life force.
