Three animated short films, all produced at Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg’s Animationsinstitut, are in the running for a FIRST STEPS Award in the Short Steps category:

The Children's Jury at the Countryside Animafest Cyprus has awarded "A Very Special Meal" with the Young Audience Award! 🥔🧡

And that's not all: "Dancing Friend" received a Special Mention from the same jury! 🐛💚 Thank you so much!

✨ Student Academy Award 2026 in the Animation category for THE PANIC INSIDE, a diploma project from Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg's Animationsinstitut! ✨

Congratulations to Matthias Strasser (director, screenplay, animation) and the team, including Sabina Stöckler (producer), Leon Maximilian Brueckner (film music), Lukas Huber (sound design), Elisabeth Caesar, Melanie Schnaidt (animation lead), and many more!👏

At the awards ceremony on September 14, 2026, at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), the team will find out whether they will receive a Gold, Silver or Bronze Student Oscar.

This is FABW’s ninth Student Academy Award overall, making the film school the most successful one outside the USA in this competition.

📣 Call for Entries Filmschau Baden-Württemberg

Filmmakers can submit their entries for the 32. Filmschau BW and the 23. Wettbewerb um den Jugendfilmpreis until August 31, 2026.

The festival, taking place in Stuttgart from December 2-6, 2026, is accepting submissions in the categories feature film, short film, documentary, animated film, VFX (by students or professional filmmakers), and commercial.

All submissions must have a connection to the state of Baden-Württemberg, for example, by having been filmed in the region, supported by the MFG Filmförderung Baden-Württemberg, produced by SWR, or created at one of the state’s media universities (such as Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg and its Animationsinstitut, Hochschule der Medien, Merz Akademie, Hochschule Offenburg etc.)

The Filmschau BW is organized by the Filmbüro Baden-Württemberg.

📣 The bestselling children’s book “The Unicorn That Said No” (“Das NEINhorn”) is coming to the big screen. Produced by X Filme (producers Uwe Schott and Nicole Kellerhals) together with our HEROES from studio soi (producer Carsten Bunte), and distributed by Warner Bros., the animated feature is set to premiere in cinemas on January 1, 2027. 🦄

The film is directed by the book’s author Marc-Uwe Kling and Johannes Weiland, with a screenplay by Marc-Uwe Kling and Marcus Sauermann. The project is funded by MFG Filmförderung Baden-Württemberg.

At the 2024 Stuttgart Festival of Animated Film (ITFS), the screenplay received the German Animation Screenplay Award, sponsored by the AMCRS.
