THE WATER CAN NOT UNDO YOUR LASH LIFT 🥹
Lash lamination is based on controlled chemical modification of the hair fiber, not on surface coating or temporary fixation. The durability of the result is explained by the structure of keratin hair and the chemistry of the lamination process.
Human eyelashes, like scalp hair, are composed primarily of keratin, a fibrous protein stabilized by multiple types of bonds: hydrogen bonds, ionic (salt) bonds, and disulfide bonds between cysteine residues. Among these, disulfide bonds are the strongest and are responsible for the permanent shape and mechanical stability of the hair.
During lash lamination, the first solution (commonly based on thioglycolates or cysteamine derivatives) selectively reduces disulfide bonds within the keratin structure. This temporarily softens the hair and allows it to be reshaped on a silicone rod or shield. At this stage, the lash is in a chemically plastic state.
The second solution (neutralizer), typically containing oxidizing agents such as hydrogen peroxide or bromates, re-oxidizes and reforms the disulfide bonds in the new configuration. This step permanently stabilizes the new curvature at a molecular level. Once these bonds are re-established, the lash structure is chemically fixed.
Water alone cannot reverse this process. While hydrogen bonds in hair are sensitive to moisture and can be temporarily disrupted by water (as seen when wet hair changes shape), they reform upon drying and do not affect the underlying disulfide bond network. Since lamination relies on disulfide bond reformation—not hydrogen bonding—the curl is not dependent on dryness to remain intact.
Therefore, exposure to water after proper completion of the lamination process does not “wash out” or undo the result. Only new chemical reduction of disulfide bonds, excessive mechanical damage, or natural lash shedding over the growth cycle can alter the laminated shape.
