🩸🩸🩸 For some of us, our periods arriving can be the best feeling.
The fog lifts, our energy returns, our mood stabilises. We feel like ourselves again.
It can be confusing when we’re told one-dimensional stories about the menstrual cycle, like when the good bits are supposed to be, which are the bad bits etc.
Contrary to the usual story, for some of us ovulation sucks and for some of us bleeding is the best.
This is why it’s so helpful to pay attention to your own cycle and find out what’s true for you, which may not be the same as what you hear others talk about

It’s actually weird how much resistance we can have to the idea that we should live cyclically, in alignment with our hormones.
Like somehow there is more value in showing up and living exactly the same. Every. Single. Day.
But living in alignment with hormonal cycles is the norm in nature.
And even in humans.
The male testosterone cycle shows this clearly, in terms of how it aligns with the average daily schedule of much of the world, in terms of when we start our days, how long we work, when we rest.
In full transparency, there are other hormones at play in the 24-hour cycles like cortisol, that affect both men and women, and these 24-hour hormone cycles are deeply connected to daylight.
But the point is the same: we are part of nature, and all of nature lives according to natural cycles. So why is it that this particular cycle, the one on which all human life depends, is systematically ignored and overridden?

We are the only cyclic beings in nature that are forced to override our internal rhythms.
Most of us grow up so unaware of and disconnected from our cycles, and only have to ‘deal’ with them once something goes wrong.
Cycle awareness isn’t about changing our whole lives to revolve around our hormones.
It’s about living our lives with an understanding of our hormonal rhythms, learning about our own unique patterns, and accepting, embracing and harnessing these in support of the lives we want to lead.

The menstrual cycle is a vital sign.
Just like our heart rate, our breathing rate, our body temperature and our blood pressure.
Yet it's often ignored or dismissed as unimportant.
A new article in medical journal The Lancet highlights how crucial the menstrual cycle is for understanding of women's health generally, even beyond gynaecology.
In particular, how menstrual cycle characteristics are risk factors for chronic diseases later in life, like diabetes, heart disease, cancer and osteoporosis.
Menstrual cycle awareness isn't just about living with presence and alignment each day.
The more awareness we have of our cycles, the greater our understanding of this vital sign and the better we can look after our overall health throughout our lives.

This is one of the many small pieces of misinformation we're given about our cycles.
It's up there with 'you can get pregnant at any moment' and 'the pill will fix your painful periods.'
It may not seem like a big deal, but when we're misinformed about how our cycles work, we can be disconnected from the wisdom of our bodies and the self-understanding that it can bring.
